Job Overview

Perform law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, understand access control systems, circulation and safety systems, effect arrests, and emergency response as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders, as directed by superior officers, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental trainings.  Supports the University community by providing information and assistance.  In the absence of a Police Sergeant, incumbent will serve as Watch Commander for shift.

Work Interactions

Directly responsible to the Police Sergeant for fulfilling duties assigned, performing patrol functions, and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in the protection of life and property at Georgetown University.  This person works independently with general supervision.  The incumbent works with other Police Officers, Communication Officers and Specialists, Security Officers, and Student Guards.

Requirements and Qualifications

High School Diploma (or equivalent) Required.  College Degree Preferred.

Practical Experience (years needed and type required):  At least 3 years, preferably more, of security related / law enforcement / military experience and community policing.

An equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of above requirements.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification: 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification.

  • All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing.  Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation.

  • Must also qualify for a Campus Special Police Officer’s Commission.

  • Must have current certification in Baton/OC Spray.  Successful completion of Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent. 

  • Must possess intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures. 

  • Certification of a trainer, or ability to become certified as a trainer within promotional evaluation period (for internal promotions) or probationary period (for new hires), in one or more of the following: Baton/OC Spray, Police Cycling, Field Training, CPR/First Aid, or others as may be added in the future.

  • Must be proficient using computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications is essential.  Knowledge of telecommunications equipment is desirable.  Administrative and clerical skills are a plus.

Position is considered as essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.

Very Heavy: Daily requirements to move items up to 20lbs of weight. Frequently required over 50lbs of weight and walk or stand with operation of controls. Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing over 100lbs.
