The Major Gift Officer will join a cohesive, forward-looking, and highly-motivated team of seasoned University Major Gift Officers, responsible for securing significant six and seven figure gifts from alumni, parents and friends in the context of Cornell’s ongoing $5 billion To Do the Greatest Good capital campaign.

Key Responsibilities
The Major Gift Officer is responsible for strategically managing approximately 65-100 prospect households, comprised of alumni, parents and friends, who have the capacity to make gifts of $250K to $3 million or more, with an emphasis on seven figure gifts.
The Major Gift officer is charged with creating a work plan, goals, and strategies that incorporate effective and timely next steps and effective tactics to accelerate and elevate giving.
The Major Gift officer develops and maintains purposeful and discerning relationship with prospects, based on mutual respect and trust, aligning prospect interests with Cornell’s campaign priorities.
Responsibilities include discovery, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship with an emphasis on maximizing the potential of $1m+ capacity prospects.
The Major Gift officer is also responsible for ensuring robust Annual Fund participation for his or her portfolio.
The Major Gift officer works collaboratively with colleagues in Alumni Affairs and Development including with College & Unit partners, Prospect Research, Donor Relations, Trusts, Estate and Gift Planning, Principal Gifts and Advancement Services.
The Major Gift Officer is well-informed about the university’s academic programs and campaign priorities and goals and is up-to-date on and adheres to Alumni Affair and Development protocols and policies.
Core Qualifications
B.S. or B.A. Degree
7-10 years of fundraising experience
Willingness to travel 45+ days per year, both locally and to other states
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Good judgement and strong listening and relationship-building skills
This position is a Major Gift Officer IV with a salary range of $125,210 – $153,034.
This position is based in Ithaca, NY; hybrid work arrangements are available within a commutable distance.
