South Dakota State University Police Department is seeking a dedicated individual to serve and protect the campus community.  
 
Job Responsibilities:  In this position you will provide professional law enforcement and public safety services for the state’s largest institution of higher education and the surrounding community.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
Knowledge of: 
  • Vehicle and firearm use and safety.
  • Law enforcement principles and procedures
  • First aid principles
  • Interviewing and interrogation techniques
  • Federal, state, and local laws, legal procedures, along with critical incident management
  • Computer support systems.

 
Ability to:
  • Conduct vehicle and foot patrol of university property and buildings.
  • Transport large amounts of money
  • Interpret, enforce, and abide by state and local laws and university regulations.
  • Enforce situations analytically, impartially, and objectively.
  • Record pertinent information accurately and completely.
  • Work independently with or without detailed supervision.
  • Handle stressful situations.
  • Interview and/or interrogate others to elicit pertinent information.
  • Exercise tact, patience, and discretion in dealing with people of varying backgrounds and temperaments.
  • Prioritize work to meet competing deadlines.
  • Walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Work rotating shifts to cover nights, weekends, and holidays.

 
Minimum Requirements: 
  • United States citizenship 
  • Attainment of at least 21 years of age at time of appointment
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a South Dakota driver’s license.
  • Must successfully complete the SD LE Academy or have current LE certification.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment polygraph examination and psychological screening.

 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Current SD LE certification or reciprocity eligible certification in another state.

 
Comments: Must be able to provide a highly visible law enforcement presence on campus to deter and detect criminal activity; locate weaknesses and safety hazards and be in a position to quickly respond to any and all emergencies or critical incidents. Must maintain a firm understanding of legal processes, state and federal laws, university regulations, proper police procedures, proper emergency response and adjust to each area as it changes. Must be able to maintain calm demeanor when dealing with upset, intoxicated, disorderly persons. South Dakota State University is a tobacco free environment.
