University Counselor Assistant II (Renewal Contract)

Essential functions (job duties):

Position Description:

Responsible for representing and promoting Wayne State University within in a defined travel recruitment territory. Recruitment travel includes attending high school visits, college fairs, community college events, professional conferences, community engagement events and alumni activities.

Prepare reports on applicants, admits and enrollments for assigned recruitment territory. 

Meet with prospective students and their parents and provide academic, career and admissions advice.

Review admission applications and render admission decisions.  Respond to requests for information.

Plan, organize, implement and participate in a wide range of recruitment and outreach programs for both first-year and transfer students.
Demonstrate ability to act as a liaison with other WSU units and high school and community college officials, participate in meetings and work as a member of a team. 

Essential Functions (Job Duties):

Respond to student telephone, mail, email inquiries and record communication interactions through Customer relationship Management (CRM) and case management systems.   

Responsible for meeting enrollment goals for a defined travel territory.

Meet with prospective and admitted students and provide admissions and enrollment information during campus tour visits, during counselor on duty shifts and at admissions recruitment and yield programs. 

Attends campus recruitment events including Information Sessions, Open Houses, Admitted Student Days, special group visit initiatives, Counselor outreach events and New Student Orientation programs.

Assist university Schools/Colleges and Departments with admissions presentations and tours of campus.
Reviews and evaluates applications for completion and admissions decisions.

Coordinate campus recruitment programs designed to assist prospective first-year and transfer students.

Plan and/or arrange onsite visits to high school and community colleges; provide campus tours; host high schools and community college visitors; host individual appointments and conduct onsite admissions programs.

Acquire knowledge and understanding of Wayne State University academic programs and student services to educate prospective students and their families about the University’s strengths, and thereby enable success recruitment and enrollment of new undergraduate students.

Keeps current on trends in higher education, University wide developments and new program opportunities.

Interpret and enforce department and University policies, procedures and regulations to students, guidance counselors, parents and constituents.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Undergraduate Admissions and/or the Associate Director of Admissions and Diversity Initiatives


Unique duties:

This position requires recruitment to high schools and community colleges in a defined recruitment territory and other markets as assigned; with the ability to load and transport admissions materials, displays and other equipment. Some evening and weekend hours required, especially during recruitment travel seasons.


Qualifications:

Must have a valid driver’s license and must be willing to use own vehicle, at certain times for travel, including work nights and weekends.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree.
Master’s Degree required for University Counselor I.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Previous Admissions Office experience.
Contact involvement with high schools, community colleges, and other secondary institutions.
Program development, evaluation and reporting experience. 


Preferred qualifications:

Working knowledge of computer applications and industry-related systems. Willingness and ability to travel independently. Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with the public, communicate effectively and project a positive image. Demonstrated public speaking skills and the ability to present the University in a positive way to diverse populations. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and work collaboratively as part of a team. Proficiency in language other than English.
