Summary

The University Chaplain provides pastoral accompaniment, religious and spiritual formation, and prayer and worship opportunities for students, faculty and staff of all faith traditions. The Chaplain encourages, fosters, and deepens individual and communal transformation in accordance with Barry University's Mission and Core Commitments, Catholic Identity, and Dominican heritage. 

The University Chaplain also supports Barry University’s mission and Core Commitments by forming and educating students, faculty and staff in the Mission and Core Commitments’ rootedness in the Catholic intellectual tradition and the history and heritage of the Dominican Order. As part of this pastoral and formational role, the University Chaplain serves as a direct report to the Director of Campus Ministry for day to day responsibilities, with a dotted line reporting structure to the University President for special University needs.     

This is an In-person position.

Essential Functions

The University Chaplain presides and preaches at Campus Ministry and University liturgies:

a. Facilitates preparation, planning and implementation for Catholic worship, including Weekday Mass, Sunday Mass, Christmas Mass, Easter Triduum Liturgies, Holy Days of Obligation, and Divisional and University celebrations of the Eucharist (e.g. Mass of the Holy Spirit, Founder's Day Mass and Baccalaureate Masses, etc.).

b. Facilitates planning and implementation for ecumenical and interfaith worship events that reflect our culturally and spiritually diverse student body, with liturgical team;

c. Oversees and evaluates Liturgical Ministers (e.g. Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Sacristans, Acolytes, Hospitality Ministers, etc.) for weekday Mass, Sunday Mass and other special events/celebrations;

d. Coordinates worship events for the Barry community.

e. Actively seeks collaboration and participation of students, student groups and organizations, and Barry personnel in worship events.

f. Serves as liturgical resource for the Campus Ministry team by keeping the team updated on liturgical issues, policies, rituals, and publications, which come from the USCCB, the Archdiocese and other sources.

The University Chaplain promotes religious and spiritual formation and is responsible for supporting student faith communities/organizations by:

a)  Providing pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, sacramental reconciliation and anointing of the sick.

b)  Overseeing the vision, planning and implementation of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

c) Serving as a visible and accessible member of the ministerial staff on campus. Forming and supervising such groups consistent with the Catholic identity, Dominican heritage and Adrian foundation and sponsorship of the University. 

d)  Identifying, coordinating and collaborating with local clergy and religious leaders to address the faith needs of all students.

Performs other job-related duties as required that include but are not limited to:

a) Advises the President on matters impacting Catholic Mission and spiritual values.

b) Participates in Committee or Task Force work, or other special assignments as directed by the Director of Campus Ministry, or the Office of the President.

c) Performs other related functions and responsibilities as required or requested by the Director of Campus Ministry, or the Office of the President

d) Works with the Campus Ministry team to coordinate use, care, and maintenance of the Chapel.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Master's degree in Pastoral Theology required

  • Doctorate degree in Pastoral Theology preferred

  • 5 - 8 years of relevant experience required

  • Necessary to interpret sophisticated theological doctrines and canon law in addressing complex intergenerational pastoral needs. This skill demands an advanced hermeneutic to negotiate the Catholic Christian religious and spiritual tradition in light of complex cultural realities sensitive to issues of gender, race ethnicity and religion.

  • Necessary particularly in the oral communication of doctrine/dogma as that pertains to preaching and teaching, confessional/pastoral counselling and  spiritual direction and other public rituals/celebrations.
