Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Unit Computing Specialist for Rutgers University Libraries. Reporting to the IT Manager for the Integrated Information Systems (IIS) unit at Rutgers University Libraries (RUL), the Unit Computing Specialist provides primary support for library-specific applications (i.e., Springshare Apps (LibCal), ProQuest ETD Administrator). This position frequently works under technical supervision.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Troubleshoots and resolves application issues reported by end users.
  • Analyzes user needs and evaluates new products as directed.
  • Reviews existing software configurations and proposes changes to ensure systems are working efficiently and meeting organizational needs.
  • Prepares testing scenarios and conducts testing of software applications.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts training.
  • Maintains related documentation.
  • Provides end-user support including resolving hardware, software, operating systems, and networking issues. 
  • Installs and troubleshoots hardware (i.e., replace hard drives, install memory) and software used by faculty, staff and public users.
  • Assists in providing workstation security support in collaboration with OIT Information Protection and Security (IPS).
  • Provides support for wireless, mobile, phone (VoIP), video conferencing and instructional technologies.
  • May provide entry level system administration for a mix of system environments, including Windows and Mac.
  • Maintains working knowledge of new developments and technologies.
  • Researches and investigates various specialized computing options and solutions to support service needs.
  • Conducts research on new technologies, as requested.
  • Develops clear and technically sound documentation regarding systems, software, and general processes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth familiarity with all current versions of Windows and Mac workstation software.
  • Troubleshooting experience with software applications, desktops, mobile devices as well as networking issues relevant to workstations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with writing technical and end user documentation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment handling multiple concurrent tasks/projects while working independently and in a team setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in configuring and managing software products and Windows/Mac OS support, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with LibCal modules and ETD Administrator.
  • Knowledge of Windows Active Directory administration.
  • Knowledge of university computing environments is preferred, as is knowledge of networks, LANs, and network software.
Equipment Utilized
  • Familiarity with PCs, Laptops and Mac/Apple operating systems
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds for the purpose of moving computer equipment short distances.
Special Conditions
  • Use of personal vehicle will be required to visit various library sites.
  • Clean driving record.
