The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at CSU offers a curriculum that integrates exceptional classroom learning and in-depth engineering practice for an unparalleled educational experience. Made up of 43 faculty members, 10 staff members, 1,000 undergraduate students, and 125 graduate students, ME is one of the largest departments on CSU’s campus. State-of-the-art labs provide unmatched, hands-on experience to help undergraduate students conceptualize industry environments, and $11M in annual research funding provide groundbreaking opportunities focusing on health, materials, and energy, for graduate students to enhance their educational concentrations. Award-winning faculty offer industry and academic perspective, and equip each graduate with the tools needed to obtain leading positions in advanced technology fields. The Mechanical Engineering program at CSU includes majors in both Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering-Mechanical Engineering; both curriculum combine classroom learning with engineering practice. Position Summary
Colorado State University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in Fort Collins, Colorado is planning to hire two full-time, 12-month Undergraduate Academic Advisors. The Advisors will advise and support the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student population through a variety of advising and programs designed to assist students in making critical transitions, developing academic plans, and connecting with campus resources.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;
  • 1 year of experience advising, counseling, and/or providing support to students;
  • Demonstrated commitment to, knowledge of, and experience with historically underrepresented communities that are supported on a university campus, such as ethnically/racially diverse students, first generation students, veterans, or international students;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal, and public speaking); and
  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the start date. Mechanical Engineering will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. 
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • 3 years’ experience supporting high school or college/university students in achieving educational goals;
  • Strong customer-service experience to work with multiple constituents including students, parents, educators;
  • Experience designing, implementing, evaluating, and collaborating on programs or events;
  • Experience supervising or advising student groups;
  • Experience with higher education technology systems (preferably Banner and Navigate); and
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Human Development, Psychology, Counseling, Communication Studies, Sociology, Student Affairs, Education, or related field.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Advise current and prospective students on academic requirements, scheduling of classes, semester-to-semester academic path, administrative procedures related to academics, and utilizing campus resources.
  • Guide students on review of transfer evaluation of coursework. Clarify and recommend any needed reevaluations.
  • Assist students on utilizing strategies and resources to improve GPAs and overcome academic difficulties.
  • Process documents related to graduation, overrides, exceptions, appeals, education abroad, military, athletics, and other advising related issues.
  • Abide by FERPA regulations to uphold students’ privacy.
  • Support efforts to streamline communication to students ensuring that deadlines, resources, and events are communicated consistently and at appropriate times.
  • Evaluate credentials of graduating seniors to determine if current Department, University, and ABET requirements have been met.
  • Communicate with the Registrar’s Office and other student support offices’ staff as needed in advising students.
  • Document appointments with meeting notes.
  • Attend conscientiously to the diversity of the student population, including unique strengths and needs of students from underrepresented ethnic/racial/gender groups and first generation and low-income backgrounds.
  • Provide comprehensive, individualized advising at orientation sessions for incoming first year and transfer students.
  • Enhance support for academic transitions and strengthen the ability to track progress to graduation.
  • Assist with the management of Department records, spreadsheets and databases related to the undergraduate program and students.
  • Learn new technology and tools designed for student success and integrate them into a balanced and holistic approach to advising.
  • Collaborate within the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Program team to advise students efficiently and effectively.

  • Support the coordination of recruitment events including demos, labs, updates on handouts and confirmation of speaker(s).

  • Coordinate a Department of Mechanical Engineering recruitment, retention, mentoring, international and/or diversity related program.
  • Determine, develop, market, and coordinate all initiatives and communications programs.
  • Select, advise, guide, and support student staff / volunteers on MESA and MECH Exec Board.
  • Maintain website and web-based information associated with program.
  • Develop and present an annual report for relevant program to the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Program team and Department.
  • Develop and present annual budget proposal for relevant programs.
