The University of Oklahoma is seeking an Undergraduate Researcher beginning Spring 2024 for a project led by School of Meteorology Faculty Dr. Kathy Pegion, Associate Professor and Williams Chair in Earth System Prediction on Subseasonal to Seasonal Timescales. The Undergraduate Researcher will contribute to a new NOAA funded project to understand how variability of North Atlantic sea surface temperature can affect summer hydrology/water resources, extreme temperatures, and coastal inundation in the Southeastern US through its impact on the North Atlantic Subtropical High.  

Responsibilities:


  • Manage and process shared model predictions and projections and observations-based verification datasets for the project. 

  • Contribute to development of a website and data catalog for the project 

  • Contribute to the development of prototype prediction products related to summer hydrology/water resources, extreme temperatures, and coastal inundation in the US at seasonal to decadal timescales 

  • Collaborate with SoM students and faculty, U. Miami collaborators, and scientists at other institutions

Job Requirements

Required Education: Must be enrolled in the Spring semester as an undergraduate student at OU. Majoring in meteorology, geography, environmental science, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline.   

  • Must attach Spring 2024 ONE class schedule

  • Must have completed one course (e.g., METR 1313) or other demonstrated experience in Python programming. 

  • Must have completed one course in meteorology (e.g., METR 1003 or METR 1014)   

Skills:

  • An ability to work both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Evidence of responsibility through employment, volunteering, family, or other relevant experiences. 

  • Genuine interest in climate  

  • Genuine interest in application of computer programming to climate data
