The UAS Lecturer is a non-tenure track position and will be responsible for teaching and course development within the Center for Aviation Studies. Courses will be focused on FAA Remote Pilot certification requirements, UAS flight operations, UAS business development, and UAS Safety and Human Factors Performance. These courses are offered at the undergraduate level and have students from multidisciplinary backgrounds enrolled. Experience in teaching students from a variety of academic backgrounds is required.

The Center for Aviation Studies (CAS) uses the USI (Unmanned Safety Institute) curriculum to supplement its coursework. Successful candidates for this position would be required to pass all the USI modules to earn the USI Instructor Certification prior to teaching upper-level coursework.

This position may receive a course release to assist with flight operations to stay current with the CAS aircraft fleet.

The UAS program at Ohio State is expected to grow in the coming years and this position will continue to build new courses so that new technology can be incorporated. The courses offered will be a mixture of traditional lecture-based and hand-on laboratory courses where students will learn to fly an aircraft. Experience with the following systems is preferred; Zephyr, Drone Logbook, and USI.

Performance Objectives

• This position will be expected to teach up to eight courses per year at the equivalent of three credit hours per course.
• This position may receive course release, as needed, to assist with drone operations within the Center for Aviation Studies.
• This position will need to maintain currency on all aircraft owned by the Center for Aviation Studies to teach students.
• This position will require in-person teaching in both a lecture-based format, and in an experiential lab setting for flight training.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required

• Valid FAA Remote Pilot certificate with at least 100 hours of documented UAS flight time accumulated on a variety of platforms with varying flight configurations; to include multirotor, fixed wing and VTOL
• Masters degree or verified experience of professional training as a remote pilot of complex aircraft
• 2 years remote pilot experience with a history of operating progressively more complex systems
• Higher education teaching experience with experience in course development
• Training and/or experience in BVLOS operations
• Experience with research grade remote sensing equipment, GIS data processing, photogrammetry, hyperspectral cameras, mapping missions, automated and manual flight modes
• Professional approach to dynamic risk management and risk mitigation and development of SOPs
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• A commitment to or demonstrated efforts in teaching that reflect Ohio States Shared Values .

Desired

• 5 years remote pilot experience with 150 hours of flight time and a documented history of operating progressively more complex systems
• Background of contributing to sponsored academic research
• Experience with multiple motor types to include electric, gas, and hybrid
• USI instructor certification and AUVSI certifications

The Center for Aviation Studies aviation programs span three colleges at the university. Here are the three majors in aviation:

The Center for Aviation Studies also offers the minor in aviation for students at the university. All aviation programs with the university have received accreditation from Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI). Each semester 300+ students participate in labs or coursework at the university airport, utilizing its fleet of 20 aircraft, flight simulators, air traffic control tower, weather station and communications and navigation systems. Through the Center of Aviation Studies, students have the option to attend the university's Flight Education program that is housed at the universitys airport.
