Normal Work Schedule: Varies - Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; occasional evening/weekend hours


Job Summary: The Ultrasound Technician performs high-quality ultrasound studies. Provides detailed explanation of the ordered procedure to the patient. Programs and adjusts the scanner for specific procedure. Assists with interventional or minimally invasive procedures for either diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Evaluates any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and/or the patient's inability or unwillingness to tolerate the exam and/or associated procedures.


Additional Department Summary: This position will float to provide general ultrasound services at multiple University Medical Center Clinic locations.

The Ultrasound Technician provides diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic equipment and procedures. Works directly with patients and physicians and operates imaging equipment. Explains the ultrasound procedure to patients. Evaluates images for technical quality and presents images and preliminary findings to physicians and the healthcare team. Maintains patient records and medical notes related to the ultrasound procedure.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Completion of an accredited ultrasound program and two (2) years of ultrasound experience. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) and registered Vascular Technologist (RVT).


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated competency in sonography and ultrasound studies. Ability to perform ultrasound services as directed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or other qualified medical professional. Ability to effectively use Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS).

Efficient and accurate computer and data entry skills. Excellent communication, public relations and customer service and telephone etiquette skills. Ability to multi-task in a fast paced work environment. Desire to exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy, and tact in patient/staff interactions. Willingness to learn and consistently deliver patient-centered, high-quality customer service. Ability to maintain strict confidentially of protected health information and follow HIPAA regulations at all times. Punctual and reliable, ability to work extended hours as needed during busier clinic times.


Preferred Qualifications: Sonographer certification by American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) preferred. 3D/4D ultrasound knowledge/experience preferred.
