Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) for the Department of Adult Medical Services within University Correctional Health Care. The Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) ensures that the total health needs of inmates within New Jersey Department of Corrections are met. This includes adolescents (16 to 18 years), adults (18-64 years), and geriatrics (65+). Utilizes the medical model to meet a variety of healthcare needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Works with a variety of healthcare professionals and correction officers in a correctional environment providing health services to inmates. Administrator of Nursing Services, with clinical supervision provided by the Medical Director. Provides basic medical services under a collaborating licensed physician.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs initial and follow-up assessments of inmates-patients in a variety of settings such as initial intake area, healthcare unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary. Performs or schedules laboratory and diagnostic procedures to determine health status as assigned by the Physician. Obtains histories and performs physical examinations to determine normal and abnormal adult health status. Communicates findings in a comprehensive and organized fashion verbally and in writing.
  • Utilizes effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
  • Participates in problem-solving activities of the healthcare team by attending unit meetings, utilizing positive interpersonal skills and appropriate channels to initiate change.
  • Communicates information in an accurate, concise and timely manner.
  • Evaluates and documents inmate-patient progress and response to medical interventions. Makes referrals as necessary to the physician or other health team members.
  • Maintains clinical area in clean, neat, safe manner.
  • Maintains current professional skills and continues professional growth to enhance the practice of correctional healthcare and the image of the organizations.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Registered as a Professional Nurse in the State of New Jersey.
  • Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential, extensive reading required.
