Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is currently seeking a part-time Tutor! Working under the general direction of the Statewide GEAR UP Education Program, the counselor works one-on-one with high school students, addresses the needs of diverse learners, serves as a positive role model, and interacts with students and/or faculty using discernment, follow-through, and decision-making. 

The area of tutoring will be English and general tutoring.



Summary of Responsibilities

  • Interacts with students on a one-on-one basis and in small groups, assisting with their schoolwork and tutoring in various academic subjects.
  • Keeps detailed records of student interaction and activities.
  • Tracks student progress by following through with each student, recording successes and/or problem areas.
  • Professionally represents the GEAR UP program at individual high schools, helping to keep the program running smoothly through prompt attendance, taking initiative, and maintaining consistent and effective communication with the GEAR UP counselor and school staff.
  • Motivates students to succeed through positive reinforcement and being a good role model.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities related to position assigned by GEAR UP counselor. 


Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required. 


Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of subjects assigned to tutor.
  • Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with students to enhance their knowledge in all junior high or high school level courses.
  • Ability to work with GEAR UP personnel and school staff at their assigned schools, colleges, or other locations.
  • Ability to effectively tutor students of all ages (list subject expertise on supplemental questionnaire).
  • Ability to use initiative, demonstrate dependability, and use time constructively.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diversity of individuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
