Job Summary:

This position is expected to be a lead researcher reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI) on research projects.  This individual will also be expected to take on the role of PI or Co-PI for selected projects. Employee understands that TTI is an honest broker for information and focuses on quality and unbiased research.  Employee independently evaluates, selects and applies standardized data analysis procedures and techniques to assignments of moderate complexity, involving potentially conflicting design requirements, unavailability of materials or processes, etc. Employee will be responsible for managing current contracts as well as submission of new proposals, composing various reports and white papers, presenting deliverables and study reports, overseeing students and other personnel, developing proposals, and inter-program coordination and project management. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree

  • 3 years related work experience

Essential Duties:

  • Actively seek and obtain externally funded research projects, performing work on basic and applied freight problems.  Participate in research proposals serving as a significant lead in the proposal. 5%

  • Assist with the overall direction and management of junior and student researchers, which includes the day-to-day supervision, planning, administration, evaluation, and implementation of the research functions. Manage, communicate, and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams comprising research staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and support staff to ensure the completion of research objectives and timely delivery of high-quality project deliverables. 5%

  • Perform applied research duties, including data collection, analysis, coordination, and supervision. Plan, schedule, coordinate, and report detailed phases of research and development projects. Evaluate and document data collection requirements and activities. Coordinate data gathering activities and gather data needed for research tasks. Assemble, organize, document, and archive datasets. Synthesize data and extract meaningful statistics and trends. Develop and/or run applications to conduct the research. Analyze and develop potential new techniques, policies, procedures, and recommendations. Conduct the necessary literature review and background information search to support techniques and methodologies used, as well as documenting past research for reporting purposes. 60%

  • Report preparation: Compile, document, and present results in formats required for inclusion in reports, technical memoranda, and presentations. Prepare technical documentation, including literature reviews, data collection, analysis, and summaries. Prepare project reports and other deliverables as required. Prepare materials for presentation of research results and other deliverables at technical meetings or other venues and to sponsors. 20%

  • Research presentations: Prepare and give presentations to existing and potential sponsors, academic settings, or conference settings. Prepare, schedule, conduct, and document research meetings. 5%

  • Interact with sponsors and potential clients. 4%

  • Other duties as assigned to carry out research or administrative activities of the program/division. 1%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD

  • Ability to read and write professionally in English.

  • At least 2 years’ experience in rail freight research.

  • At least 2 years’ experience in marine freight research.

  • At least 2 years’ experience in freight transportation research.

  • Functional understanding of truck freight issues.

  • Experience with cruise and/or ferry operations.
