Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs tree care management to ensure the safety of people and property by maintaining the health, strength, and attractiveness of trees in a campus environment. Must understand soil and tree biology, a good understanding of tree anatomy, and must have the ability to climb and cut tree limbs. The person in this position will apply current ANSI Z1.33.1 and ANSI S300 standards, ISA tree pruning guidelines, and OSHA regulations.

Essential Job Duties

  • Responsible for planting new trees, maintaining and pruning trees, and removing dead or unwanted trees.
  • Inspect trees to identify serious problems, such as: disease or pest conditions, fungus, fruiting bodies, decayed trunks or branches, cracks or other structural weaknesses, or anything indicating a potential hazard and take corrective action.
  • Assess soil and space requirements for new trees.
  • Install tree cables, braces, and supports when needed.
  • Use climbing saddle, rope and harness to access and move safely in trees when reach by aerial truck in not possible.
  • Operate a variety of equipment such as: aerial/boom lift truck, chain saws, root pruner, pole pruners, stump grinder and brush chipper.
  • Inspect and maintain ropes and rigging equipment.
  • Submit tree removal and/or replacement recommendations.
  • Maintain database (ArborPro) with tree work records and submit reports.
  • Respond to emergency calls regarding fallen trees or limbs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Certification in tree trimming or arborist.
  • Minimum of 5+ years’ work experience in tree care or related field.
  • Advanced knowledge of tree biology and tree anatomy.
  • Proven knowledge of tree names, characteristics, and pruning requirements of tree species.
  • Able to work at various heights and all-weather conditions.
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license and be able to drive Institute vehicles.
  • Must be eligible and be able to adhere to the Institute's Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. daily.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills.
