Transportation Research Engineer

Job Summary

The Transportation Research Engineer will extend technical expertise in the Traffic Lab, develop new research avenues utilizing existing and improved experimental resources. You will collaborate with faculty to prepare proposals to actively pursue new research funding, and interface with sponsors on field implementation of research projects.

 

You must submit examples of work with large data sets exceeding 10 billion records to be considered for this position.

What We Are Looking For

 

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related degree
  • 2-3 years of experience in transportation and infrastructure systems and analyzing large data sets such as commercial probe vehicle data, airport operations data, and traffic signal data
  • Experience with multiple types of connected / probe vehicle data analysis; these vehicle probe data include commercially available crowd sourced data, Bluetooth MAC address matching data, side fire radar, wireless magnetometer sensors, inductive loop technology, and video analysis
  • Experience with traffic signal systems and vehicle detection systems
  • Experience with Cloud data warehousing services, ArcGIS, SQL Server, the Microsoft Office Suite, version control systems (such as Git), Adobe After Effects, Synchro, HCS, and VISSIM
  • Experience with creating and handling real-time data ingestion services from telematics APIs

 

Preferred:

  • Ability to provide evidence of this experience in technical reports or publications

 

Skills:
Required:                

  • Knowledge in the following areas: relational databases, traffic operations, transportation systems analysis, optimization, performance measures
  • Demonstrated expertise using Google Big Query
  • MUST submit examples of work with large data sets exceeding 10 billion records
  • Discretion and independent judgment in all areas of research including choosing methods and strategies and avoiding loss of valuable research time and resources
  • Responsible and accountable for design of field experiments
  • Ability to delegate and manage day-to-day research procedures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated by a history of publication/research dissemination
