Description of Work Unit

Position Summary
The Manager of Translational Informatics works with the Office of the Vice President of Research (OVPR) leadership, investigators, and technical teams to identify needs, recommend and implement solutions, address research requirements, and provide informatics services in support of complex clinical and translational research projects. This position reports to the Chief Medical Research Officer and leverages knowledge of healthcare, information systems, databases and information technology security to gather, store, interpret and manage the massive amount of data generated by complex clinical and translational research. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Medical Research Officer; the Manager, Regulatory Affairs; and other OVPR and Colorado State University (CSU) leadership to ensure that data systems and handling are compliant with all relevant regulatory and professional standards. This position would also work in coordination with the Division of IT to ensure cybersecurity and university data standards and best practices metrics are met utilizing RedCap, Domo, HIPPA compliant storage and software solutions, CUI, CMMC, FISMA, etc. This position will report to the Chief Medical Research Officer but coordinate closely with OVPR Information and Technology Research Services to ensure alignment and avoid unnecessary overlap. 
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree related to computer science and/or informatics required. 
  • Five years’ work experience managing complex data systems. 
  • Experience with complex data systems needed to manage, analyze, and store data related to public health, clinical and translational research, or clinical development efforts. 
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, regulations and procedures related to information technology systems for clinical and translational research and development efforts. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with internal and external customers, colleagues, and leadership. 
  • Able to synthesize complex ideas, goals, and instructions and then propose strategies to address OVPR objectives. 
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage a variety of tasks and activities in a timely and effective manner. 
  • Work effectively with a diverse number of people and communicate complex information in a manner that is succinct and clear. 
  • Proficient in the programming languages needed to perform the functions of the role.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Advanced computer or informatics degree 
  • Three years experience supporting complex data systems needed to manage, analyze, and store data related to public health, clinical and translational research, or clinical development efforts. 
  • Demonstrated leadership experience heading large multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Experience effectively managing a team, providing mentorship, and providing both positive and constructive feedback that is both respectful and empowering. 
  • Publication record in the field of informatics.

  • Provide informatics support for investigators and teams involved in complex clinical and translational research, identify and implement software solutions to enhance productivity and compliance with regulatory standards, monitor software development cycles, and be responsible for readiness planning, roll-out efforts and tracking usage metrics. 
  • Perform all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. These include requirements established by the US Government, FDA, CMS, or other regulatory and legal bodies, as well as tools needed for effective management of clinical and other sensitive data, such as HIPAA-compliant systems, LIMS systems, or other identified need. 
  • Analyzing data in collaboration with others to help facilitate decisions and actions 
  • Developing or evaluating data-driven solutions to improve clinical and translational research project success and making recommendations to OVPR leadership regarding technology acquisition. 
  • Collaborating with OVPR and other departments at CSU to provide a strategic plan for acquiring and maintaining state-of-the-art data analysis tools 
  • Designing and implementing or evaluating tools to measure data, enhance study intervention effectiveness, and streamline processes 
  • Ensuring that clinical and translational research data are integrated, accessible, accurate and secure.

  • Maintain or supervise others to maintain database information for the facility and/or department personnel on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. This includes ensuring accessibility of accurate information to department personnel as needed.

  • Prepare and distribute weekly, monthly and ad-hoc reports in accordance with established guidelines and procedures or as requested. 
  • Create and deliver training for users; depending upon the size of the program, you may be collaborating and coordinating 
  • Assist and/or supervise department staff in the performance of project-related work, as needed or assigned. 
  • Perform required reports and assessments evaluating supervisees, as needed. 
  • Facilitate the communication and translation of regulatory and IT requirements between departments. 
  • Perform analytical and reporting activities, analyze, track and submit data, and related activities in a timely and accurate manner.
