  TRAINING SPECIALIST – FULL TIME – BASIC NURSING ASSISTANT

The City Colleges of Chicago’s School of Nursing at Malcolm X College (MXC), one of the City Colleges of Chicago, is currently seeking full-time training specialists for our Basic Nursing Assistant (B.N.A) Program.  A B.N.A. Training Specialist is responsible for course planning and instruction and teaching students the patient care and basic nursing skills needed to provide physical care and emotional support to patients. A B.N.A. Training Specialist prepares students for employment as nursing assistants and to take the state exam to receive certification. Performs related duties as required. 

 

The B.N.A. Program prepares students for employment as a Certified Nursing Assistant in hospitals, home health, long-term care and other healthcare facilities. The program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).  Satisfactory completion of the program leads to eligibility to take the state’s Nurse Aide Competency Exam for certification. Certification is required for employment as a Certified Nurse Assistant.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provides instruction through classroom theory/lecture, laboratory demonstration and skills practices, and supervised clinical sessions at a designated health care facility such as a hospital, nursing home or long-term care facility. 
  • Leads syllabus development to deliver student-learning outcomes (SLOs) in accordance with IDPH guidelines.
  • Provides students with course syllabus including course outline, grading standards, attendance policies, and classroom behavioral expectations.
  • Leads in B.N.A. curriculum updates and development. 
  • Prepares lessons to teach and facilitate student learning to develop basic nursing skills using appropriate methods of instruction.
  • Maintains student attendance and grading records in compliance with CCC policy and guidelines.
  • Constructs exams and assignments to evaluate student learning.
  • Evaluates student progress and provides students with timely feedback. 
  • Responsible for student evaluation and timely and accurate submission of grades and paperwork related to instruction.
  • Maintains a purposeful, orderly, safe, and healthy classroom environment. 
  • Consults with the program coordinator and associate dean to resolve issues
  • Serves as an accessible mentor and advisor to B.N.A. students.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, various projects, and assessment work.
  • Contributes to departmental and institutional committees.
  • Creates an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve using critical thinking skills.
  • Helps students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and cultivates a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching, commitment to integrating new technologies in the learning process and the ability to inspire, motivate and empower students to succeed.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with diverse students and staff.
  • Meets with IDPH evaluators during unannounced monitoring visits and provides evaluators with required documents in accordance with IDPH guidelines. Demonstrate ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability and willingness to teach late afternoon, evening, Saturday, and summer courses.
  • Ability to work at various sites/campuses, including but not limited to:  MXC main campus, West Side Learning Center, South Chicago Learning Center and Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center.
  • Adheres to City Colleges of Chicago board rules, policies, procedures, and code of ethics. 

 


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing with a current and valid Registered Professional Nursing Illinois license.
  • Two years of experience as a registered nurse (RN). Must have experience as an RN in at least one of the following areas: 1. teaching theory in an IDPH approved basic nursing assistant training program; or 2. providing nursing care, including personal care and activities of daily living, to older adults or chronically ill adults.
  • Candidate must be eligible to complete an IDPH approved Illinois Evaluator Certification and approved Evaluator Workshop refresher course every five years 
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS healthcare provider CPR certification.
  • Experience with technologies used for Instruction such as Blackboard or Brightspace/D2L
