Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial, and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking an individual to work as part of their facilities team. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing preventive maintenance and service-related functions on various mechanical equipment systems at Southwest Virginia Community College’s main campus and off campus site locations.
Job duties include:
Performs installation, maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repairs to electrical equipment according to specification and code
Performs assembly installation and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water and
drainage systems according to specification and plumbing code
Performs HVAC projects and preventive maintenance of HVAC systems
Responsible for mechanical repairs and maintenance of college owned vehicles and equipment
Serves as emergency staff member, and reports to work due to inclement weather, an emergency, staff shortage, etc.
Assists with campus faculty/staff office or classroom moves, event set-ups, mail and package
delivery, and working special events as directed
Some travel required and some evening or weekend hours may be required
Any and all other duties as assigned by supervisor

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Experience in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.

  • Mechanical skills with knowledge of boilers (electric & oil), air handling units, fire sprinkler systems, fan coil units, exhaust fans, circulation pumps, fire pumps, air compressor, emergency generators, and eye/shower wash stations.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze and solve practical problems.

  • Ability to maintain documentation and service records in both paper and electronic format.

  • Record keeping in accordance with EPA, OSHA, and other governing authorities.

  • Ability to use computer maintenance management work order system.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to safely move and handle objects weighing up to and greater than 50 pounds.

  • Demonstrated ability to climb and work from elevated work stations, such as ladders and scaffolds.

  • Demonstrated ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing, and pulling.

  • Must be able to routinely and effectively interact with a diverse group of campus partners and stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and familiarity of construction, renovation projects, hand and power tools.

  • Abilities include lifting, carrying, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling and reaching.

  • Working knowledge of personal computers.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow instructions and to perform job tasks in a timely manner.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, work at heights in confined spaces, establish priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated skills to operate hand and power tools.

  • Ability to perform basic math and knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and skills to perform in HVAC applications.

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of experience required.
