Job Description:

Description of Duties:

The Trades Generalist will perform journey- level work and supervise sub-ordinate maintenance staff in the repair, maintenance and installation of cooling equipment, boilers, HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical systems, and related equipment. The position will frequently perform maintenance and preventative maintenance activities on chillers, cooling towers, boilers (steam and hot water), compressors, and air handlers. The Trades Generalist is also responsible for the planning and laying out of work and the diagnosis of trouble in mechanical systems or equipment in an assigned area, on an assigned project or for an entire facility. Other reasonable duties as assigned.

  • Troubleshoot assigned work orders related to HVAC systems, plumbing, fire suppression, and mechanical equipment in dormitories and academic buildings. 
  • Install, maintain, and repair chillers, boilers, hot water heating systems, cooling towers, control devices, and appliances. 
  • Inspect mechanical equipment, perform preventative maintenance, prepare and maintain inspection reports, and estimate repairs. 
  • Coordinate with HVAC, plumbing and mechanical contractors on critical maintenance projects.  
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Four (4) years of full-time experience in a plumbing, refrigeration, boiler, or HVAC trade which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of journey-level experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to use the tools, machines, and equipment necessary for the trade. 
  • Experience with cooling tower and boiler (steam and hot water) maintenance.
  • Certification and experience as a NYS DEC Category 7G cooling tower pesticide applicator. 
  • Applicants must possess a New York State driver's license and have the ability to operate a motor vehicle.  
  • Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and to communicate effectively to obtain and convey information. 
  • Basic computer skills including MS Word and Excel.
  • Certification in aerial, scissor, and fork lift operation. 
  • OSHA 10-hour certification.
  • Experience with control wiring, PLC's, frequency drives, and transformers.
