What You Will Do

The Trace Radiochemistry Team (subteam of the Clean Chemistry Team) in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group of the Chemistry Division is seeking outstanding candidates for a postdoctoral position performing chemical separations/purifications for nuclear forensics purposes. The postdoctoral research associate will focus on developing new methods for the purification of trace constituents (e.g. Pu, Am, Np, Th, Pa, Ra) from bulk matrices (U, sediment, etc.) for isotope signature and trace element analysis. Methods developed will primarily support nuclear forensics and the characterization of material found out of regular control with applications to basic research as well as a number of national security projects. In addition to this work, this postdoctoral position offers opportunities to pursue research related to: radiochronometery/age dating for nuclear forensics; international safeguards; applications of non-traditional metal stable isotope systems to the nuclear fuel cycle. It is expected that the successful candidate will present their work at national/international conferences, and will publish their results in appropriate refereed journals. A background in mass spectrometry is preferred but not required.
