Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The mission of the Division of Student Success is to work in partnership with the University community to deliver high quality services to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse student population and strive to provide service, leadership, and transitional student support for UNCG. The Division of Student Success is committed to designing, implementing, and providing the services necessary to promote student success throughout the entire student life cycle from day one to diploma. This division includes the offices of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, University Advising, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Students First Office, Academic Achievement Center, TRiO Programs, UNCG Guarantee, GEAR UP UNCG, and the Multiliteracy Centers (Speaking Center, Writing Center, and Math Help Center).
Position Summary
The TrACE Project Director is part of the TrACE replication team at UNCG. The UNC System Transfer Accelerate Complete and Engage (UNC TrACE) initiative aims to fund, evaluate, and scale cost-effective strategies to help North Carolina Community College transfer students enrolled at a UNC institution complete their bachelor’s degree. The responsibility for transfer student success is shared between the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management and advising units across the university. TrACE has created a structure through which the Division of Student Success can support academic advising centers across campus in advising transfer students, particularly in their first year, when advising is most critical. This position will provide support to UNCG’s efforts to improve the transfer student experience and partnerships with area Community Colleges.
This is a time-limited position funded through a grant from the UNC System Office’s Student Success Innovation Lab.
The project director manages the daily operations of the TrACE initiative. This position is responsible for ensuring UNCG is following the research specifications as prescribed and for maintaining accurate records and research data. The program director will report to the Assistant Director for Transfer Initiatives and will supervise the TrACE Academic Advisor and Graduate Assistant.
In addition, they will:
● Oversee program’s budget and daily administration including communication with campus stakeholders
● Enforce the data collection protocols associated with the study
● Contribute to and deliver training for the TrACE academic advisor and student workers
● Maintain relationships with academic units, specifically advising centers and faculty advisors
● Evaluate program services and make recommendations to improve program offerings
● Monitor academic progress and outcomes for TrACE program participants, design and implement strategies to improve academic performance and retention
● Provide monthly and semester reports to the UNC System Office
● Serve as a member of the UNCG TrACE project team and contribute to grant reports
● Collaborate with other UNC System TrACE Directors to support consistency in the replication project
● Manage the recruitment of prospective students into the TrACE program/study
● Committee membership to support the grant may be assigned
● Complete other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
● Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree area’s of consideration include: higher education administration, college student personnel, student development, or a closely related field of study, from a regionally accredited institution
● Demonstrated management and supervisory skills
● Budget oversight and planning experience
● Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing transfer or non-traditional students
● Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within a department, with faculty, staff, and other administrators.
● Strong organizational, communication, and facilitation skills
● Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities.
● Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Excel, Student Information Systems; and an aptitude to learn new systems as needed.
● Understanding of academic advising best practices and models, experience serving as an academic advisor, interpreting degree requirements, and applying academic policy.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates
Valid NC Driver’s License, this position may have to travel to statewide meetings that could require transporting students for the TrACE program to community colleges or the UNC System Office in Raleigh.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills.
  • Willingness to work select evenings and weekends, as necessary.
  • Preferred knowledge of Banner and Starfish.
  • 1 year or more years, Post-Master’s degree, of directly related experience.
