FULL-TIME/PERMANENT TOUCHET RIVER STEELHEAD VSP PROJECT LEAD FISH & WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 2 (BIO2) Salmon Recovery Science Unit Dayton, Washington – Columbia County Assist the SEWA Salmon Recovery Science team leader in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data relevant to ESA-listed steelhead (and salmon) populations across Southeast Washington and serve as the Touchet River Steelhead Viable Salmonid Population (VSP) project leader. With that in mind, This is an opportunity to directly benefit and ensure the completion of the Touchet River Steelhead VSP project goals and objectives, and help to achieve and fulfill the broader goals and objectives of WDFW. With your experience, install and operate adult and juvenile fish traps using established methods to estimate abundance of ESA listed Touchet River summer steelhead at multiple life stages. Duties: Our Touchet River Steelhead VSP Project Lead Serves as the Biologist for the Touchet River Steelhead VSP project: Install and operate adult and juvenile fish traps Develops and implements work plans to achieve project objectives; Analyzes data using appropriate estimation and analytical methods. Prepares and co-authors annual reports to Bonneville Power Administration Fish and Wildlife Program, and Governor’s Salmon Recovery Office; summarizing annual and seasonal data collection and lessons learned to date. Develop annual budgets and statement of work using WDFW and BPA contracting programs. Supervises and mentors technical staff: Develops the Performance Development Plan (PDP) for each assigned employee within project team: creates or updates position descriptions; monitors and documents employee performance; provides on-going feedback regarding levels of performance, and conducts timely and meaningful employee performance evaluations; Seeks to hire highly qualified, competent temporary and permanent field staff Manages personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc… in a positive manner for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Monitors and inspects work in progress to ensure continuity and timely completion of work. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Safety hazards in the field include (but are not limited to): rough and unforgiving terrain, slippery conditions, extreme hot and cold temperatures, and potential interaction and injury from biting insects, snakes and poisonous plant species. When not performing fieldwork, most tasks will be performed in an office setting. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, looking at computer monitor for long periods of time, sitting or standing for long periods of time. Schedule: The employee will generally be scheduled for a 40-hour Monday-Friday workweek to meet supervisory requirements of the Scientific Technicians. Some variations in the basic work schedule will occur during peak field season activities (spring and fall) when 7-day a week adult and juvenile trapping operations are underway, including night and weekend shift work; this may result in cause work to be performed in excess of 40 hours per week. Travel Requirements: Occasional travel is expected to attend meetings related to funding, training, and professional development conferences. Tools and Equipment: Welding and fabrication tools, PIT Tag Arrays and PIT Tag scanning equipment, Coded Wire tag detectors, electronic data capture equipment (laptops, tablets, dataloggers), general tools for installation of adult traps, smolt traps, PIT Arrays, etc. Customer Interactions: Some private landowner contacts are required to complete surveys, and to secure sites for Adult Traps, Smolt Traps, and PIT Arrays. General interaction with the public is limited.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis. A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science AND one (1) year of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research. Note: A Master’s degree or above in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in: Basic budget management The operation of resistance board floating weirs AND the use of alternate materials and designs. Developing novel methodologies for in-stream biological and behavioral studies for both juvenile AND adult salmonids. Utilizing knowledge of inland anadromous salmonid life histories. Conducting natural production monitoring including; spawning ground surveys, smolt monitoring with rotary screw (smolt) traps, tagging and marking techniques (including the use of PIT tags and Floy tags), and calculating production estimates. Weir fabrication, operation, installation and maintenance, Welding, (Both aluminum and steel), for trap repairs and fabrication. Operating, installing and maintaining rotary screw traps.
