Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Thrive@Carolina Campus Hubs (Hubs), which includes Academic Advising, a collaborative and innovative approach to deliver holistic support to undergraduates from admission through graduation. We represent a deliberately integrated effort that embraces delivering services in a manner that welcomes experimentation, is scalable and focuses on continuous improvement. Our mission is to champion students’ individual stories through purposeful interactions so that they achieve their academic, personal, and post-UNC goals. Anchored in the belief that we serve a diverse population in which every student does not need the same support or know the same information, Hubs seek to partner with students as they unlock their potential, activate their plans, secure their opportunities, and cultivate their community. Nestled within the College of Arts & Sciences, Hubs are comprised of ~60 full- and part-time personnel and serve students in a variety of campus locations.
Position Summary
The Office of Undergraduate Education seeks a passionate, committed professional to join one of the Thrive@Carolina Campus Hubs, comprised of individuals dedicated to providing student-centered, holistic and seamlessly delivered support to students from acceptance through graduation. Reporting to an Assistant Director, Thrive Advisors provide direct student support to an assigned caseload of students as they unlock their potential, activate their plans, secure their opportunities and build their community. Hubs staff bring positive energy and a collaborative mindset to their everyday work, partnering with campus staff, faculty and one another to eliminate barriers to student success and ensure all students thrive. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to the liberal arts, a keen understanding and appreciation of utilizing an intersectional framework to support students and demonstrated experience maximizing student engagement through highly effective communications and programming.
This is a 12-month, full-time, permanent, EHRA Non-Faculty position which will require some evening hours and may have non-standard work hours.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to the delivery of student advising and counseling or student personnel services, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Minimum SACS qualifications to be appointed as a fixed-term faculty.
- Two years of professional direct student support and programming experience.
- Appreciation and understanding of a liberal arts education.
- Experience or training in social justice, diversity and/or cultural competence with a strong interest in continued professional development in these areas.
- Familiarity with the academic, wellness, engagement and financial challenges faced by undergraduates.
- Excellent judgment, sound decision-making skills and respect for confidentiality.
- Ability to take initiative, and work independently and in a team environment with limited supervision.
- Strong organizational skills to prioritize work and needs of students within assigned caseload.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships and working collaboratively with staff and colleagues.
- Flexibility to evolve with a dynamic environment and ability to maintain composure, professionalism, and positive attitude during lengthy periods of high volume, intensive work.
- Ability to utilize and/or learn various student services and software applications, learning platforms, and technology-based delivery systems.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Counseling or a related field strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of the academic advising and career services professions, especially integrated academic and career counseling and development methodology.
- Deep familiarity with the intersectional framework and best practices required to achieve student success.
- Familiarity with career and educational planning assessments.
- Experience teaching, training or facilitating.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations to groups.
- Experience, or interest in, contributing to educational research and professional literatures.
- Strong interest in promoting innovative systems and building a culture of integrated, holistic support for students.
- Familiarity with social media and other digital technology and their application in higher education settings.
- Involvement with NACADA, NACE, NASPA, ACPA, NODA or other professional organizations which support holistic student success.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
