Summary

The Thompson Scholarship Advisor provides holistic support to a caseload of Thompson Scholars from the time they enter our program through graduation. The advisor will help scholars connect with people and resources across campus, engage in personal and professional development opportunities in and outside of our program, and find meaningful service opportunities to give back and contribute to the public good. The advisor will communicate with and support students in understanding scholarship requirements and track completion of these requirements throughout the year. As part of the broader Thompson Scholarship team, this individual will support the overall department goals and initiatives of the Thompson Working Families Scholarship program, specifically relating to 80% retention and 80% graduation requirements set by the Thompson Foundation.


Essential Functions

Advising/Mentoring

  • Meet regularly with assigned caseload of scholars to monitor academic progress and performance, providing support and guidance via one-on-one meetings, group sessions, and additional outreach
  • Build trusting relationships with a diverse student population, many of whom are low-income and first-generation
  • Support students in identifying academic and co-curricular experiences aligned with their academic, personal, and career interests
  • Serve as the BGSU Outreach Coordinator for caseload – monitoring and communicating about Early Alerts, Mid-term Grades, Not Enrolled status, etc.
  • Serve as an advocate for each scholar and address issues in a timely manner
  • Refer students to appropriate BGSU and non-BGSU support offices and/or organizations as needed to support student success
  • Ensure that students are working with an assigned college/academic advisor on course planning, major selection, degree requirements, university policies and procedures, and career planning related to students’ academic goals and registration procedures
  • Serve as an advising resource for immediate help with students’ questions in person, over the phone, or through email
  • Communicate with Financial Aid, College Offices/Academic Advising, Marvin Center for Leadership & Civic Engagement, and other areas to support students as they work towards meeting scholarship requirements
  • Develop more intensive advising meetings based on scholarship standing and at-risk metrics
 Administrative
  • Responsible for maintaining/managing scholarship recipient caseload and work-lists
  • Maintain and update student files/records, notes, and reports in accordance with federal, state and university regulations
  • Utilize current and emerging technology and available data to monitor individual student, cohort, and overall performance, engagement, risk and to communicate with students to support and foster success, persistence, retention, and graduation
  • Provide proactive and responsive outreach to assigned students based on various data sources (e.g., pre-matriculation data, predictive modeling, early alerts, and midterm grades). 
  • Monitor and communicate with students regarding completion of scholarship requirements and status with the program, providing additional support as needed
  • Cultivate relationships with faculty, staff, administration, and community partners to support goals/initiatives of the scholarship program and to support student success
  • Submit student award nominations and write letters of recommendation
  • Represent department at Preview Day, President’s Day, and other recruitment activities
  • Participate in team meetings and attend one-on-ones with supervisor 
  • Participate in department, division, and university wide committees as needed
Additional Duties
  • In consultation with the team, plan and implement relevant programming including personal and professional development workshops, social events to build community, and organize and promote group service opportunities
  • Develop and lead initiatives and programs which contribute to student engagement, learning, development, and successful degree completion
  • Assist in creation, development, and implementation of emerging best practices (including TS Summer Link Program, Thompson Scholars seminar, etc.)
  • Support TS Student Leadership Team
  • Other duties as assigned 


Minimum Qualifications

The following Degree is required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
The following Experience is required: 
  • 6 months experience in an academic setting working with students 
    • 2 years of experience as a GA or student employee is equal to one year of professional experience
The following Experience is preferred:
  • 6 months experience in advising, counseling, teaching, facilitating, coaching in an educational setting, or experience working with a diverse population in one-on-one and group professional setting

  • Knowledge of computer applications including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, People Soft/CSS and SSC, an ability to learn and adopt other technologies, and comfort level to use computer database, word processing, spreadsheet programs and web-based applications
  • Ability to interact well with students, parents, faculty, administrators and other members of the campus and community
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn design thinking concepts, student development theories, and career development theories
  • Compassionate and caring attitude toward working with students
  • Effective in working with and supporting diverse populations, particularly low-income, first-generation and students from underrepresented populations
  • Event planning/programming experience
