This position is expected to run from Fall 2024 through Spring 2026 and will be a part of large cohort of new faculty joining the Bellevue College community. 

The Bellevue College Theater Arts program is seeking qualified candidates for a temporary full-time position of Theater Arts Faculty/Technical Director for the 2024-2026 academic years. The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to student success through teaching and learning excellence, will be responsible for designing sets and lights for productions, teach Theatre Arts classes, including Lighting and Scenic Technology, and mentor and instruct students in design, technical, and stage management. This faculty member will operate and maintain the technical assets of the theatre, including scenic construction, sound, lighting, projection, and the overall maintenance and operations of stage facilities in Stop Gap Studio Theatre, the Shop, and all storage areas. In addition, full time faculty are expected to advise students, assist in curriculum development, participate in college governance and initiatives, and maintain currency in their discipline.

Faculty are under the general direction of the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and are responsible primarily to the Dean of the Arts and Humanities Division. Full-time faculty teach in face-to-face settings and synchronous and asynchronous virtual settings, and are expected to deliver in-person classes or a combination of in-person and virtual classes.

Position Salary Range: $77,250.30/year - $108,344.14/year

Annual salary is based on a 176-day contract with a minimum of $77,250.30; beginning salary will be determined by the assessment of the candidate's education and related experience. New hires start no higher than $82,831.36 unless exceptional circumstances prevail. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

In addition to teaching, full-time faculty maintains office hours and participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

The Theatre Arts Department of Dance and Drama expands and enriches the learning, life, and culture of all students and faculty of Bellevue College by introducing students and audiences to current, historical, and cultural perspectives. The program provides students opportunities to experience the art of performance through a breadth of program offerings in the craft of acting, design, and dance. The Theater Arts Program strives to advance student learning goals through the exploration of dramatic literature and advancement toward degree attainment in pre-major courses or training in advanced in acting, dance, musical theatre, playwriting, directing, and design. The Program produces 3-4 stage plays and/or musicals a year, and 2-3 Dance events annually. Theater Arts collaborates with the Bellevue College Music Department regularly. Productions are held in Bellevue College Carlson Theater and Stop Gap Studio.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Teach Technical Design courses: Lighting, Design, Set Construction, and additional Drama courses.
  • Foster a positive, caring, equitable learning environment where differences and pluralism are valued, and all students have opportunities to be successful learners.
  • Provide culturally-responsible advising, such as navigating obstacles that underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations may experience in college (e.g. students with disabilities, students of color, first generation college students, LBGTQ students, Veterans, 2nd language learners, etc.)
  • Participate in on-going curriculum development, revision, and implementation that incorporates multi-cultural perspectives.
  • Ongoing curriculum development, assessment, revision, and implementation through inter- and intra-departmental cooperation and collaboration.
  • Participate in department, division, and college governance (such as serving on committees, advising student clubs, and supporting initiatives).
  • Maintain knowledge and skills current in discipline and area of assignment.
  • Participate in the life and culture of the department, division, and college, including the college-wide effort to dismantle barriers that can impact underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations.
  • Hold at least five weekly office hours and generally assist students in person one-on-one and/or both through electronic media and in-person.

Act as the program’s technical director, serving such areas as:

  • Set design, lighting and construction
  • Theater assets, production budgets and theatre shop
  • Supervision of Students in the construction of sets, lighting, rigging and other Technical Design.
  • Holding current required certifications for all Theater-related design and activities.
  • Technical Director for all Drama, Dance, and staged Music productions.
  • Master of Fine Arts in Drama, Dance, or Technical Direction, Lighting or Scenic Design, or related master's degree.
  • High school or college teaching experience. 
  • Professional experience in the following: Technical Direction or scenic design, construction, computer-aided design, rigging, painting, and master carpentry.
  • Willingness and ability to teach in various modalities (face to face, hybrid, online.)
  • Experience in mentoring or teaching student or volunteer theater workers.
  • Experience teaching systemically non-dominant populations, and dedication to increasing inclusivity and closing opportunity gaps for historically marginalized students with intentional curriculum and instruction design.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an inclusive manner with diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience using theatrical computer software to support the production process.
  • Ability to climb into fly space over stage and auditorium, construct and move objects up to 75 lbs., place lighting and sound equipment, and climb stairs and ladders.
  • Experience with Canvas or another learning management system.
  • Experience with Musical Theater Productions.
  • Experience with Drama, Dance and Music Productions.
  • Experience using Vectorworks to support the production process.Experience in preparing and managing production budgets. 
  • Record of active contribution to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, whether through teaching, professional service, or community engagement.
  • Project management skills.
