The sports video reporter is responsible for creating one 1 - 3 minute-long video story each week related to UAA sports for The Northern Light, UAA’s student-run newspaper.
The sport video reporter finds interesting and newsworthy stories that lend themselves well to video storytelling. They research, attend games and collect sound and video to use in their projects. Also, they collect photos and/or create graphics to be used with projects.
Projects by the sports video reporter will appear on The Northern Light’s website and social media. They work with other staff on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other mediums.
The sports video reporter is under the sports editor. They are responsible for following the The Northern Light editing process, which includes following the Associated Press style as closely as possible. They are responsible for completing edits, submitting drafts and final projects by deadlines and are expected to attend pitch meetings to discuss stories. They work with other members of the sports section to assist with sport stories.
The Northern Light is UAA’s student-run newspaper, funded by student media fees and advertising revenue. The Northern Light explains issues that affect UAA while providing balanced coverage in representing students, staff, faculty and the greater community.
The Northern Light serves as a source of news, information, entertainment and offers a platform for discourse. The paper publishes stories online and in print. Copies of the printed edition of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Distribution is about 1,500 copies. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Have creative ability in video production.
• Ability to work on deadlines and work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to prepare, develop, and/or repackage features content for use in other media.
• Proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Clipchamp or other video and
image editing software.
• Possess familiarity with word processors, Google Drive, and Windows and Macintosh
computers.
• Ability to present news in a balanced and unbiased way.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• College level courses in journalism and public communications.
• College level courses in video production.
• Experience working on a publication or doing video production.
• Possess knowledge of copyright law, the First Amendment, the Freedom of Information Act
and media ethics.
Minimum Qualifications:
To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in good academic standing, or have approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
Position Details:
This is a part-time, up to 20 hours a week, student position paying $12.03/hour.
