Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Temple Grandin Equine Center (TGEC) is located in the Department of Animal Sciences. The Department of Animal Sciences has the unique mission of serving Colorado’s large and diverse livestock industries. Research, teaching, and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture.
Position Summary
This position will administer all aspects of the TGEC volunteer program including recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers, and perform all tasks to manage the volunteer needs for all appointments and special events. As the Adaptive Horsemanship Instructor, this position will be responsible for teaching adaptive horsemanship lessons, individual and group, and will work with all staff, other providers, and volunteers in accordance with facility policies.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Current certification as PATH Int’l Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI)
  • Experience working with volunteers in an equine environment
  • Experience educating others about equine-assisted services
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with and managing volunteers
  • Prior experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel, and Outlook
  • Organized and resourceful, customer-focused, and active listener
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position to include standing and walking for prolonged periods of time
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • PATH Int’l ESMHL Certification
  • Experience training and mentoring PATH Intl CTRI Instructors-in-training
  • Experience with WRANGLR software

  • Manage all aspects of volunteer program, including but not limited to recruitment, interviewing, screening, training, scheduling, record keeping, and ongoing stewardship. 
  • Communicate with all staff and providers to identify available opportunities and needs for volunteers, and recruit using a variety of resources and techniques. 
  • Gather information about volunteer’s skills, availability, and goals; match volunteers with appropriate opportunities based on this data. 
  • Schedule, coordinate, and assign volunteers to appropriate providers, programs, supervisors and/or mentors. 
  • Communicate regularly to ensure placement is a good fit for individual’s skills and goals. 
  • Maintain files, records, applications, and other data concerning volunteer program. 
  • Draft, maintains and publish guidelines, best practices, and procedures for volunteer program. 
  • Coordinate volunteer recognition and appreciation events and activities. 
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Prepare for, plan and instruct adaptive horsemanship lessons, group and individual; facilitate and assist others to provide equine-assisted services, and assist in making sure all equine-assisted services provided at TGEC meet and adhere to all facility policies, including, but not limited to, PATH Int’l standards.

  • Assist in providing instruction to or explanation of EAS programming to staff, interns, students and volunteers. 
  • Assist in hosting EAS demonstrations and providing instructions to or explanation of EAS programming to potential clients and general public, organize and host special events at TGEC and in community. 
  • Participate in community outreach, fundraising, and promotional events.
