Position Highlights

The Teratogen Information Specialist is responsible for responding to phone, chat and/or email inquiries from healthcare providers and the public regarding the risks and benefits of various exposures (medications, vaccines, supplements, etc.) before and during pregnancy and lactation using evidence-based research and provided talking points.

This position will also assist with entering call/chat/email data into the OTIS database in a timely manner, contributing to the development and/or updating of MotherToBaby educational resources, helping with outreach to diverse populations to increase awareness of the MotherToBaby service, and educating other providers.

This position 20 hours/week, generally during regular business hours, Monday-Friday. Specific hours to be determined depending on the individual and fluctuating needs. One full day in the office is required; the remaining hours may be done in the office or remotely from an off-campus location.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Answer consumer and provider exposure inquiries related to drugs, environmental toxins, household products, vaccines, medications, herbal products, infections, maternal medical conditions, and other exposures before and during pregnancy, as well as during breastfeeding via phone, chat, email, and in person.
  • Participate in the education of graduate students via teaching and supervising a genetic counseling graduate student once a week during the school year.
  • Provide statistics on counseling contacts by caller type (consumer/provider), caller query (pregnancy/breastfeeding), referral source, and key demographics such as race/ethnicity, age, state using the designated contact database system for call/text/chat/email data as well as outreach activities. 
  • Demonstrate increased counseling and outreach contacts from the previous year and document these contacts in the identified user groups and target under-served populations.
  • Participate in and actively contribute to monthly conference calls with all Network Site members to monitor progress, develop new strategies, share activities and ideas. 
  • Must attend the annual Teratogens course, produce one blog for the year for the baby blog on the MotherToBaby website, or contribute to one podcast.
  • Attend once per month one of the case conferences hosted by Utah MotherToBaby to discuss research findings and consult with invited experts. Must host one session during the year. 
  • Submit to the Fact Sheet Project Team two fact sheets as directed by the Fact Sheet Project Team for updating, per quarter. These assignments must be completed within the time parameters assigned. 
  • Provide referrals to the Research Center after counseling. Service will have an increase of 10% in Year 9, over Year 8 for number of referrals. The National Office will monitor, track, and communicate progress with each TIS.
  • Must market the service by exhibiting at a conference or trade show as well as advertise on social media or through marketing materials.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of, understanding of, and ability to teach on the topics of embryology, teratology, and birth defects.
  • Skill in counseling and risk communication techniques.
  • Ability to critically evaluate the scientific literature and appropriately communicate findings to a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge and application of the principles of health literacy and inclusive language.
Minimum Qualifications
  • ABGC board certified or board eligible genetic counselor; willing to obtain state license when applicable. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with teratogenic information counseling.
  • Spanish-speaking preferred.
  • Experience with phone, chat, and email counseling.
