Detailed Job Description

The Golisano Institute for Sustainability at the Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester, NY) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Sustainability. 

The successful applicant will have demonstrated research experience and the potential to become a leading expert in sustainability research that is distinct from but complementary to research by our current faculty. Particular emphasis will be placed on research in the fields of circular economy, sustainable manufacturing, recycling/material recovery, sustainable business, food systems/organic waste, environmental/sustainability policy, social and behavioral aspects of sustainability, and applied data science for sustainability.

The responsibilities of the position are teaching, research and service. The faculty member will teach two courses each year: One core course for MS/PhD programs (Fundamentals of Sustainability Science, Industrial Ecology, Risk Analysis, Economics of Sustainability, Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, or Technology, Policy and Sustainability) and one departmental elective.

Depending on departmental needs, the elective may be in area of candidate’s interest or could involve developing and implementing an undergraduate course in sustainability. The faculty member will build a research program resulting in published peer-reviewed, scholarly research, while mentoring and supporting PhD students with external grants. Service includes serving on department and institute committees and engaging with external communities.

Department/College Description

The Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) at Rochester Institute of Technology is a leader in sustainability education and research.  The Institute is currently staffed by seven academic faculty, seven research faculty, and over 60 professional staff scientists, engineers and administrative support personnel.  Degrees offered include Master of Architecture, M.S. in Sustainable Systems, and Ph.D. in Sustainability. These programs are led by multidisciplinary faculty who collaborate with organizations locally, nationally, and internationally to create solutions to complex sustainability challenges. GIS also recognizes and is committed to the value of a diverse graduate student community, with strong recruitment and enrollment of female and underrepresented students. The flagship of GIS is the LEED platinum-certified Sustainability Hall, a $38 million, 84,000 ft2 facility dedicated to the GIS academic mission.  The building serves as a center for sustainability research, technology transfer, education and outreach, and provides a state-of-the-art showcase for green construction and design. It incorporates a “smart” microgrid and a variety of sustainable technologies, including a 400 kW phosphoric acid fuel cell, 40 kW photovoltaic array, geothermal wells, and a green roof with rainwater harvesting. Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree by the time of appointment.
  • A strong scholarly agenda and record of collaborative scholarly research related to sustainability, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publication.
  • Demonstrated potential to secure external funding resources that will support a group of PhD students.
  • Ability to advise graduate students and excel at graduate-level teaching.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in a multidisciplinary environment with an appreciation for, and commitment to, a systems approach to sustainability.
  • Particular emphasis will be given to candidates with a research record or trajectory that complements but does not significantly overlap the research thrusts of current GIS faculty, and the potential to contribute to the development and teaching of GIS core and elective courses.
  • Candidates who have the potential to complement, strengthen, or expand the Institute’s extensive network of partnerships and sponsor relationships with major international manufacturing firms, government agencies, national labs, and domestic or international research Universities will be regarded favorably.
