JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, seeks applications for a tenure-line faculty position to be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, with a preference on the Assistant Professor rank. The position is scheduled for a start date on or after August 1, 2023. Candidates with technical expertise in soft materials broadly defined, including polymers, materials synthesis, biomaterials, or molecular materials, are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out research, service, and teaching in materials science and engineering while supporting diversity, equity and a culture of inclusion.

Applicants for the Assistant Professor rank should have:

  • A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field by the time of appointment

  • A robust research and publication track record

Applicants for the Associate Professor or Professor rank should have:

  • A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field by the time of appointment

  • An excellent teaching and mentoring track record

Penn State is one of the largest materials research institutions in the United States, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is an international leader in materials education and research. The MatSE Department consists of 29 faculty members, 200 graduate students, and 370 undergraduate students. MatSE at Penn State is committed to building an inclusive community with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds. Research programs span the many sub-disciplines of materials science and engineering with more than $16.5 million expenditure in 2017. Steidle Building, which houses the MatSE Department, recently underwent a $52 million renovation that provided new laboratory space, educational labs, office and meeting space, and state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, the Materials Research Institute (MRI) supports state-of-the-art facilities for characterization, synthesis, nanofabrication, and computation while seeding and incubating collaborations across many disciplines. MRI facilities are co-located with facilities for the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences in the new Millennium Science Complex. Beyond those mentioned above, Penn State hosts several federally and industry sponsored centers, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Atomically Thin Multifunctional Coatings (ATOMIC), the Department of Energy Center for Lignocellulose Structure and Formation (CLSF), the NSF Center for Dielectric and Piezoelectrics (CDP), and the NSF Center for Membrane Science, Engineering and Technology (MAST).

Additional opportunities for engagement include the Institute for CyberScience, Penn’s State’s computational research hub, and with the Institutes for Energy and the Environment (IEE), which works to build teams of researchers from different disciplines to enable new partnerships and new ways of thinking to solve some of the world’s most difficult energy and environmental challenges. There are also opportunities for engagement with the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, which offers interdisciplinary graduate programs, operates shared core facilities, supports strategic research initiatives through faculty co-hires and cluster hires, and operates the institutes’ Centers of Excellence, among many other activities supporting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research at Penn State.
