Position Summary

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Detroit Mercy College of Engineering & Science invites applicants for a tenure track faculty position at the assistant or associate level in Computer Science starting August 16, 2024. The successful candidate will be an effective and enthusiastic teacher-scholar, developing innovative hands-on teaching strategies and curriculum for undergraduate and graduate courses and laboratories. We are particularly interested in candidates who will contribute to our efforts to provide support and opportunities for underrepresented students majoring in science and engineering disciplines.


Computer Science and Software Engineering are housed in the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department and offer a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Master of Science in Software Engineering, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Data Science, and minors in Bioinformatics and Computer Science, and supports the Graduate Certificate in Vehicle Cyber Engineering. The small classes, excellent facilities, and close collegial relationships make teaching at Detroit Mercy exciting and rewarding. The College’s faculty forms a vibrant community of teaching scholars with a strong focus on professional and academic mentorship of students.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty are expected to teach a variety of courses based on the needs of the department and students. In addition, faculty are expected to develop a research program involving the supervision of undergraduates and graduates, seek external funding, and publish in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.


Requirements

  

Minimum Qualifications

  • An Earned doctorate in Computer Science or a related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • Commitment to innovative, evidence-based teaching strategies that enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Flexibility in teaching different computer science and software engineering courses both at undergraduate and graduate levels based on the department’s need.
  • Active research agenda with a record of recent scholarly publications.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace or community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching computer science courses at post-secondary level or equivalent instructional experiences.
  • Industry experience
  • Experience and knowledge in Cybersecurity, Computer Security, or Network Security.
  • Commitment to students’ holistic development, including encouraging students to reflect and engage with computer science in a broader social context.
  • Evidence indicating the promise of service to the department, college, university, community, and profession.

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).


Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
