General Information
The College of Arts and Letters in which the School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD) is located, enrolls more than 3,100 undergraduate majors and about 150 graduate students across ten academic units in the humanities, social sciences, and communication studies. Home to several interdisciplinary centers and institutes, the College employs 270 full-time faculty. We embrace the teacher-scholar model and encourage excellent applicants within our particular disciplines, as well as scholars and teachers eager to work across them.
SMAD invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position, with a focus on interactive design and UI/UX design, beginning in August 2024.
Interdisciplinarity is a SMAD hallmark. SMAD’s distinctive undergraduate major has four concentrations: Creative Advertising, Digital Video and Cinema, Interactive Design, and Journalism. Each empowers students to use mass media as a vehicle for storytelling. SMAD provides one of the finest media production facilities in the country offering instructional workspaces for creating video, audio, graphics, animation, websites, and apps. The School has about 700 undergraduate majors and more than 20 faculty members, who represent a blend of professional and academic interests. All SMAD faculty are actively engaged in teaching, service, and research or creative activities. For more information, go to http://www.jmu.edu/smad .
Duties and Responsibilities
We seek a student-oriented colleague who is committed to mentoring and producing compelling stories through user experience design and who can teach some combination of SMAD foundation courses and interactive design concentration classes. The ideal candidate also will demonstrate excellence in creative works or scholarly research that incorporates innovative uses of state-of-the-art tools, processes, methodologies, and creative practices in areas such as artificial intelligence, information architecture, interaction design, or spatial computing.
Qualifications
An MFA or Ph.D. is required within 10 months of date of appointment; ABD applicants will be considered. The ability to teach current trends in technology with industry specific software (such as the Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, and GitHub) is required.
