Tenure-Track Assistant Professor – Public Sociology

The George Mason University Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in public sociology, to begin August 2022 (teaching load is 2:2).
George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of diversity and excellence among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.
About the Position:

The Sociology Program seeks a sociologist who is committed to publicly engaged research. We conceive of public engagement broadly, to include research conducted with community partners as well as critical approaches to understanding the production of knowledge with and about publics and public social formations. We are particularly interested in applicants who integrate innovative methodological strategies for community-engaged research. Areas of specialization are open and may include a focus on racial capitalism, (de-)democratization, environmental justice, criminal justice reform, or urban and/or rural poverty and inequality, but should be undergirded by a commitment and vision to building sustainable communities, lives, and livelihoods.
The successful applicant will also be able to contribute to the mission of the newly rechartered Center for Social Science Research (https://cssr.gmu.edu/about) and participate in one or more of its research hubs. The CSSR is housed within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and is committed to conducting publicly engaged social research that can promote social justice and inform equitable social policy.
The successful applicant will have teaching experience and a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment. Applicants also must demonstrate a productive research and publication trajectory, as well as a record of, or potential for, extramural funding. We are particularly interested in a sociologist who has a vision for involving graduate and undergraduate students in externally-funded research projects, and success in community partnering or experience working in social or public policy.
Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Sociology by the time of appointment;
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity (e.g., publications, conference presentations, invited lectures);
  • Record of successful teaching;
  • Record of or potential for external funding; and
  • Engagement in diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of professional work (teaching, mentoring, leadership, research, community engagement).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Success in community partnering or experience working in social or public policy;
  • Vision for involving graduate and undergraduate students in externally-funded research projects;
  • Demonstrably strong potential for excellence in scholarship;
  • Experience teaching and working with students of diverse backgrounds;
  • Strong interest in community outreach and working with the Center for Social Science Research;
  • Readiness for designing innovative course work related to public sociology;  and
  • Skill in integrating innovative methodological strategies for community-engaged research.
