Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in poultry diagnostic medicine and virology in our Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

The Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians and animal owners of the state of Iowa and across the United States. Iowa leads the U.S. in egg production and is in the top 10 in turkey production. The successful candidate will be extensively involved with Iowa’s poultry industries and will join a department with 55 food animal focused faculty members and 170+ staff. This position will commit approximately 50-60% effort to professional practice/outreach, 30-40% to research and 5-10% to teaching. Responsibilities will include providing pathology and virology diagnostic services to the poultry industry, developing and delivering outreach services to the poultry industry, and conducting infectious disease research of relevance to the Iowa and U.S. poultry industries. The person in this position will also be expected to establish an independent and collaborative applied research program in areas such as infectious disease epidemiology, pathogenesis and control. The successful candidate will also contribute to the clinical education of professional and graduate students. This position will serve as a liaison between the College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa poultry organizations, and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. The person in this position is expected to participate in and contribute to regional and national professional poultry health associations.

The successful candidate must have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in departmental programs and committees. 




Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree

  • Masters of Avian Medicine or equivalent poultry residency degree

  • PhD or equivalent degree in biomedical sciences, microbiology, or a related field

  • Diplomate status or board eligible in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists

  • Diplomate status or board eligible in the American College of Poultry Veterinarians

  • At least two years of experience in poultry diagnostic medicine

  • Demonstrated record of scholarship in poultry virology research

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: Evidence of experience conducting research or other scholarly activity.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: An established record of experience and documentation of scholarship and impact in diagnostic pathology and virology.

PROFESSOR: A record of scholarship in diagnostic pathology and virology with national recognition of expertise.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated working experience coordinating cases in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

  • Demonstrated ability to instruct veterinary students.




Department/Program & College Description:

VDPAM was created in 1997 to strategically grow the resources and emphasis in production animal medicine at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. VDPAM consists of approximately 55 faculty and 170 staff. Many of our faculty and staff serve food animal agriculture through service units in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center’s Food Animal and Camelid Hospital, the Veterinary Field Services unit and the ISU VDL. The ISU VDL provides quality diagnostic services including necropsy, bacteriology, serology, histopathology, virology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics, next-generation sequencing, and toxicology as well as other analytical services.
