Position Details
Reporting to the Web Admin and Manager of Web Services, the Temp Web Developer is responsible for the user experience across the Wesleyan University website. The Temp Web Developer has a working knowledge of HTML5, CSS, Foundation, and JavaScript frameworks (such as React or Vue) and a basic understanding of user interface and user experience (UI/UX) design. Duties include turning wireframes and mock-ups into reusable code and building high-quality UI components with scalability in mind. The Temp Web Developer also implements new features within our university Content Management System (CMS) Cascade, handles the integration of plugins and third-party applications, and performs routine maintenance and performance optimizations.
The Temp Web Developer is an on-campus position working with other members of the Communications and ITS teams, to create and maintain a core set of front-end web and mobile-first application standards and templates for use across the campus web presence.
Responsibilities include:
  • Build front-end web applications using development best practices for university CMS
  • Transform app designs into front-end code with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Write high-quality, scalable, and reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Drive current WCAG guidelines for ADA compliance of all university web frameworks
  • Debug errors, troubleshoot issues, and perform routine performance/scalability optimizations
  • Supports the web services ticketing queue and responds to reported web issues and inquiries
  • Optimize on-site search engine optimization (SEO) ensuring application adheres to them

This is a temporary, non-benefit eligible, position working up to 37.5hrs per week.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, and 1 years’ experience developing modern, responsive and cross-browser compatible websites. A combination of student and professional experience may be considered.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript libraries and frameworks such as React, Vue, Laravel, Foundation, or other frameworks.
  • Proficient in web markup, including HTML5, CSS3, as well as JavaScript frameworks including JQuery.
  • Familiarity with GitHub or other code versioning tools.
  • Understanding of key website design principles and SEO optimization.
  • Experience with cross-browser compatibility testing and best-practices.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with a content management system such as WordPress or Hannon Hill’s Cascade or other CMS.
  • Experience with XSLT or Velocity.
