If you enjoy working outdoors and want to gain hands-on experience in research conducted on a diverse set of working vegetable farms, this position is for you! The Cornell Vegetable Program (CVP) is one of the premier agricultural extension programs in New York, serving a large multi-county region in the Finger Lakes and Western part of the state. Our 2022 projects include the use of lasers to deter birds from sweet corn fields, evaluation of electric weed control (e.g., “Weed Zapper”), vegetable variety trials, cover crop trials, high tunnel research, farm food safety, pest monitoring/forecasts and more! What You Will Do

You will support CCE Cornell Vegetable Program team members in carrying out various research and outreach activities in the vegetable industry. You will assess insects, diseases, weeds, and crop damage in research plots and grower fields and maintain accurate records. Additionally, you will assist with data entry, analysis, summary, and presentation of results. Duties include:

  • Collecting field data from research and demonstration projects.

  • Assisting with weekly seasonal crop scouting.

  • Assisting with crop harvests, measuring, and recording yields.

  • Assisting with trial setup, including layout, planting, treatment application, and maintenance.

  • Assisting in logistical setup for educational meetings and events.

  • Entering and summarizing data; preparing data tables, charts, and information for presentations and reports using Microsoft Office.

What We Need

We are looking for someone who has an excellent work ethic, appreciates agriculture, and can work in commercial fields that have been sprayed with pesticides.   We need a talented individual with excellent communication skills who excels at building and maintaining effective relationships with multiple stakeholders. Additionally, we need someone who has:

  • High School diploma and 6+ months of experience in agriculture, field biology, ecology, or similar setting, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.  

  • Competence utilizing current computer technology, i.e., Windows - Excel/Word/PowerPoint.

  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written). 

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple activities and tasks while meeting deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele.

  • Demonstrated ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.

  • Visual concentration and attention to detail are needed to detect pests and pest damage.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.

  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you!  There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

  • Coursework in vegetable production, entomology, plant pathology, weed science, horticulture, agronomy, field biology, or natural resources/ecology. 

  • Knowledge of or interest in bird identification or ecology

  • Experience supporting research projects, including data collection and summary.

  • Experience with basic hand tools used in building and construction or a farm setting.

This is a five-month appointment (39 hours/week) from mid-May through late September; applicants seeking part-time work at 20 hours/week will be considered. There may be occasional evening hours scheduled to complete data collection or support educational meetings.

This position will be based at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County, Canandaigua, New York, but will require regular travel throughout the Finger Lakes Region.
