Job Summary:

The Temporary University of Chicago Youth Internship Program is a paid summer employment opportunity for South Side high school students. Launched in 2021 by the Office of Civic Engagement, the UChicago Youth Internship Program (YIP) serves Chicago Public School and charter school students over the course of two summers. The Year 1 Experience takes an earn and learn approach with career and college preparation through workshops, seminars, and activities. The second summer, participants are eligible to reapply for a six-week YIP Year 2 Internship in health sciences, computer sciences, or IT services. YIP partners with One Summer Chicago, a citywide initiative through the Department of Family & Support Services’ Summer Youth Employment Program, which provides youth with employment and enrichment opportunities during the summer months.

The UChicago Youth Internship Program (YIP) Program Administrator is a temporary position through August 30, 2024 that will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day planning and execution of YIP. 

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Career Readiness Initiatives, the Program Administrator will support the following tasks which include but are not limited to: communicating with internal and external partners, working with prospective interns and their families, organizing/maintaining application documents, scheduling and conducting intern interviews, and onboarding interns selected for the program. Successful candidates will have demonstrated success in project management, youth development/programming, and working in complex, fast-paced environments.


  • Provide outreach to Chicago area youth, high school counselors and community organizations to recruit eligible applications for the Youth Internship Program.

  • Review prospective intern applications and serve as a member of the intern selection committee.

  • Coordinate logistics for information sessions and intern candidate interviews.

  • Monitor the YIP email inbox and respond to inquiries from a variety of key stakeholders: prospective interns, counselors, parents/guardians, supervisors, etc.

  • Collaborate with the OCE Communications team to leverage social media platforms for the promotion of key YIP announcements including admissions updates and notable student success stories.

  • Support the College and Career Readiness team’s HR partner in ensuring all proper onboarding and paperwork for youth is completed through onboarding sessions and reminder messages.

  • Consistently update YIP database files on a weekly basis including applications, onboarding documents, etc.

  • Facilitate orientation and community building activities for incoming YIP interns.

  • Serve as a chaperone for College and Career Readiness and YIP in-person events and activities during the academic year and summer including career exploration events, social-emotional learning workshops, workplace tours, local college visits, and more.

  • Provide support in the planning and execution of the annual day-long Careers Conference event.

  • Serve as an interviewer and support interview logistics during the recruitment/selection process for College and Career Readiness programs serving high school students including the Youth Internship Program, Collegiate Scholars Program, Space Explorers, and the South Side College and Career Catalyst.

  • Serve as a key point of contact during the six-week YIP summer program to chaperone events, troubleshoot issues that arise, and facilitate workshops for YIP high school participants.

  • Support YIP evaluation efforts by updating surveys, collecting feedback, analyzing results, and creating an evaluation summary report at the end of the summer.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


  • Prioritize and multi-task to meet key deadlines as scheduled.

  • Communicates effectively one to one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts; writes precise, well-organized emails, letters and proposals while using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with University staff, high school staff, and the general community.

  • Effective organizational and time management skills with a high degree of attention to detail.

Additional Requirements ​​

Education, Experience, or Certifications:


  • High School Diploma required.

  • Some college required.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.


  • Minimum of two years of background or working knowledge in youth development and workforce development required.

  • Minimum of two years experience working or serving youth or communities on the South Side of Chicago required.

  • Demonstrated experience managing administrative projects or supporting program operations preferred.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently required.

  • Experience working with Chicago Public Schools students or similar public school district required.

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with diverse populations of students and families required.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, and Forms) required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Part-time, temporary position through August 30, 2024.

  • Position is contingent on continued or future funding.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends required.
