Job Description Summary

The Bentley University Residential Center seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated temporary Summer Residence Director to further the department’s commitment to student development and success via the Bentley Pre-College Programs. The department seeks an individual who will assist the department with this new initiative, working in tandem with a small team to continue development, implementation, and improvement of the residential component of the Pre-College programs offered at Bentley.

A pre-college program at Bentley University provides rising high school juniors and seniors with a taste of college academics and offers a chance to experience residential life and build a supportive community. By immersing themselves in a rigorous yet supportive learning environment, students can gain valuable insights into their academic interests and career aspirations. Students develop meaningful friendships and form connections with like-minded peers from diverse backgrounds.
The programs allow students to build essential skills, expand their networks, and enhance their college applications, setting them on a path toward future success. Bentley offers three pre-college programs: Wall Street 101, Analytics Academy and Business of Health Innovation, all taught by Bentley professors. These courses take a week to complete, and are offered every week for six weeks beginning on June 17 and concluding on July 26. Maximum capacity for each week is 180 students though some weeks may be much smaller in size. This is a temporary position with multiple openings.

Essential Duties: 

  • Together with second Residence Director, provide primary supervision of program participants in the residence halls.  Assist with oversight of participant project/assignment work and community engagement from 5:00pm-11:00pm and breakfast from 7:00am-8:00am Monday-Friday for both day and residential participants in approved locations; support social programming for residential participants Monday-Friday evenings.  During the period-of- time outside of student course hours, manage Resident Assistant staff to ensure participants are accounted for and are acting in compliance with program guidelines. Help with weekend coverage of small group of students staying overnight Saturday into Sunday. Will rotate every other weekend off. Resident Assistant staff will have a 1 - 10 staff to participant ratio.

  • Partner with other Residence Director to provide overnight on-call support from 10:00pm-8:00am daily throughout program; respond as needed to issues/concerns escalated from co-curricular/advance staff on duty each night; escalate to Administrator on Call as appropriate.

  • Supervise Resident Assistants - day-to-day staff performance, co-curricular programming, conduct regular check-ins and provide constructive feedback.

  • Provide a safe, healthy, and fun environment for program participants; serve as secondary adult in ensuring “2-deep leadership” for interactions with high school students; become fluent in college and program regulations and best practices for high school students attending residential pre-college programs and serve as primary point of contact to interpret policies and practices and determine appropriate response for any participant infractions which may include escalation.

  • Maintain participant records (insurance, immunizations, allergies, etc.), parental authorizations, emergency contacts, etc. on location with participants; serve as primary point of contact in the event of participant medical emergencies; liaise with parents as needed

  • In conjunction with the other Residence Director for Pre-College Programs, oversee participant transition points, including weekend arrival and departure of residential students and their transportation to/from Boston Logan and/or South Station, weekday arrival and departure of commuter participants, and weekday movement of residential and commuter students between residential/activity location and classroom location.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • High School diploma or equivalent and at least two years of relevant experience; Bachelors degree preferred.


  • At least one season of prior directly related experience working with students aged 15-18 and/or working as a residential advisor/camp counselor or similar role is preferred.

  • Experience developing and leading student activities.

  • Effective communication skills, including cross-cultural communication skills, as well as experience or interest in working and programming with diverse populations.

  • Strong work ethic including reliability, timeliness, and professionalism.

  • Hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted United States driver’s license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley’s insurance carrier.

  • Ideal candidates will serve for seven weeks in the role beginning on Wednesday, June 12 and concluding on Wednesday, July 31.  We are happy to negotiate an earlier move-in date based upon preferences. 

  • Staff will report to the Summer Programs Housing Specialist in the Residential Center and liaise closely with the Pre-College Programs Office housed in the Undergraduate Admissions Office. 

  • Staff should expect to work approximately 40 hours per week.  Rotating overnight duty will be split between both Resident Director interns.  Typical work hours will be split between day-time and evening shifts.  Building programming will take place Monday-Friday 5:00pm to 11:00pm, and various weekend work will be split accordingly to ensure interns have adequate time off.  Must be able to work late evenings with overnight on-duty rotation.

  • Compensation total: $6,000 paid in three or four installments depending on the payroll schedule.  Breakfast and dinner provided when program is in session.
