Position Description:

The Stream Institute is seeking qualified applications for a summer 2024 position. The hire will spend their summer with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists evaluating the function of stream and wetland restoration sites, and assessing sites where restoration is planned. Multiple restoration sites are involved with several located in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

The position will be paid at $19 per hour for an equivalent of $8,550 over 12 weeks. Flexibility with work hours may be explored depending on the needs of the candidate and Stream Institute, provided that the candidate is available for at least two full days per week.

Work will combine field campaigns and data analysis involving a wide range of sampling, surveying, and analytical tools. The hire will assist with conducting biological surveys of vegetation, collect environmental data using sensor networks (water depth, vegetation health, flooding and drying dynamics, etc.) and use GIS tools to support field planning, data analysis and presentation.

The Stream Institute is unique in its combination of restoration design and applied research in restoration assessment. The hire will primarily work on restoration assessment. They will have the opportunity to shadow design engineers during field investigation and will learn about the fundamental aspects of restoration design.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current students are welcome to apply.
  • The position is for students and professionals with an interest in aquatic systems, environmental monitoring or stream and wetland restoration. Diverse majors and degrees welcome: biology, ecology, engineering, geography and environmental science.
  • Experience with being outdoors under a variety of conditions, including in rainy and hot weather.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic experience in Microsoft Office.
  • Exposure to geographic information systems (GIS) through ArcGIS or similar.
Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
