Position Summary:

For more than 125 years, our faculty members, staff and students have been working to advance the field of insect biology and apply that knowledge to solve problems and improve lives.  As one of the top-ranked entomology programs in the country, our work spans the globe and impacts human lives on many levels, influencing a broad range of disciplines including human and veterinary medicine, farming, biodiversity and genomics.

The Department of Entomology's mission is threefold: To pursue studies to understand basic and applied aspects of insect biology; to provide a robust and modern curriculum as part of preeminent undergraduate and graduate programs; and to inform and educate

The Department is currently searching for a new team member to provide technical support in a research lab working on Drosophila and mosquito immunity and intestinal physiology (stem cell biology). The individual will be expected to maintain collections of Drosophila in the lab and help maintain mosquito colonies (Aedes aegypti ). The individual will help to create new Drosophila and mosquito lines by the use of transgenesis and genetics. The incumbent will perform research under the supervision of the laboratory Principal Investigator and collaborate on projects of other members of the laboratory. Laboratory techniques to be employed will include, but are not limited to, molecular biology (DNA and RNA preparation, PCR/qPCR, sequencing, cloning), biochemistry (protein/western blots, biochemical dosage), manipulation and maintenance of bacterial cultures, animal stocks and cell lines, Drosophila genetics, dissection of live tissues, infection with insect pathogens, histology imaging and microscopy, and other techniques and procedures as necessary. The incumbent will assist the principal investigator in all aspects of the daily and weekly management of the laboratory, including but not limited to purchases, budgets and maintenance of equipment. In parallel, the technician will be included in the intellectual life of the lab and is expected to perform some internet search and maintain laboratory records. The incumbent will help the Principal Investigator to ensure that less experienced lab members adhere to laboratory safety protocol. The opportunity exists for authorship on primary research articles.

This position is a full-time temporary position. This is a six month appointment with possibility for extension up to a year. Depending on funding, longer appointment could be considered.

Required Qualifications:

Required qualification includes: Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 to 2 years, Associate’s degree, 2 years of College Coursework or equivalent. Knowledge of microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, and tissue handling (dissection, in situ hybridization, immunostaining) is important. Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills. Personable, motivated and enthusiastic about working in a group environment. Ability to work independently as well as part of a research team. Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and biohazards. Demonstrated ability to multitask and balance priorities when necessary. Must be able to carry out experiments to completion with moderate guidance. Must be punctual and self motivated. As part of a research team, motivation is a strong requirement. Attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants with a Bachelors degree or other formal training program of four years or equivalent in Biology, Genetics, microbiology or related Life Sciences, as well as some practical background in Drosophila or mosquito rearing, genetics, immunity, molecular biology, and microbiology will be preferred. The ideal candidate will have an intellectual interest in infection biology, immunity, stem cell biology, intestinal physiology or evolution biology. Applicants should be comfortable with basic computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Photoshop. Any knowledge of additional programs will be valued.
