Job Summary:

The Positive Urban Research and Prevention of Suicide Experiences (PURPOSE) Lab is a new research group formed at the University of Chicago and is led by Dr. Janelle Goodwill, faculty member in the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice (Principal Investigator). 

The mission of the PURPOSE lab is to develop research materials and resources that aid in mitigating racial disparities in suicide and other adverse mental health outcomes among historically excluded and understudied populations. The PURPOSE lab also aims to support the mental health needs of residents on Chicago’s South Side, with a particular focus on building relationships with communities surrounding the University of Chicago campus. 

The Temporary Research Lab Coordinator will work directly under the supervision of Dr. Goodwill to carry out tasks related to the day-to-day function of this new research team. Moreover, the Lab Coordinator will also work with Dr. Goodwill to build a team of undergraduate, graduated, and community-member research assistants. 

This posting is for a temporary position (up to 1,000 total hours or 6 months, whichever comes first) with the possibility of extension into a regular part-time position at the end of the term. Opportunity for position renewal will be based on employee performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day tasks and operations of multiple ongoing research projects.

  • Assist the Principal Investigator in carrying out tasks related to the development, implementation, and completion of federal or foundation grant submissions and individual research studies.

  • Arrange meetings with community partners, potential collaborators, and funders.

  • Schedule participant interviews and distribute participant research incentives.

  • Supervise undergraduate and master’s level research assistants.

  • Oversee scheduling logistics for research team meetings.

  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of research processes.

  • Maintain research lab website updates.

  • Prepare lab reports, meeting minutes, and materials for public audiences.

  • Must adhere to strict data security policies, including the handling of personally identifiable information. (PII) and personal health information (PHI) as required by local, state, and federal regulatory policies.  

  • Perform additional related tasks as needed.

Competencies:

  • Experience working on topics related to mental health, race, and well-being.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Power Point, Word, Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.

  • Ability to work independently and in teams efficiently.



Additional Requirements ​​
 

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

  • Degree in social work, psychology, public health, sociology required.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in working in research teams and community-based projects required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • 6-month commitment with the potential to extend upon satisfactory work performance.

  • Temporary, part-time; non-benefits eligible.
