Position Summary:


Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant position with the Child Health Institute at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Under the direction of the (PI) and lab members, the Temp Research Assistant (TRA) will be responsible for the performance and analysis of experiments focused on studying human stem cell models of genetic mutations causing autism and intellectual disability (ID). The project is part of a larger effort in the lab to define the role of intracellular signaling in establishing male bias in intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder.
While some experience with cell culture is preferred, the TRA will work closely with a postdoctoral fellow in the lab in maintaining several induced pluripotent stem cell lines (iPSCs) and differentiating them into neurons. They should have a broad (college-level) knowledge of biochemistry, cell biology, and neurobiology. The TRA will also be responsible for using confocal microscopy techniques to analyze multiple aspects of neuronal differentiation.
As part of their career development to transition to the next phase of their career, the TRA will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills. Multiple resources for career development to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Perform and analyze experiments to define how modulation of intracellular signaling affect differentiation in stem cell models of autism and ID.
  • Maintain stem cell lines and differentiated neurons with sterile technique following established protocols.
  • Assist other laboratory members in the generation of animals for cell culture experiments.
  • Assist in the instruction and training of undergraduate students in laboratory techniques and procedures in cell biology and animal behavior to carry out research assignments.
  • Compile and analyze data with appropriate statistical analysis, conclusions, and future directions in support of further CHI research.
  • Adhere to established performance standards and coordination of instrumentation and experimental approaches in support of CHI research.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Completion of undergraduate and/or graduate degree, or currently enrolled in undergraduate/graduate studies.
  • Major in a biomedical discipline or psychology.

Salary: $18.00 - $23.00 per/hr; based on experience
