Job Summary

Much of health is influenced by the places where people live, their environment, neighbors, and societal norms. The position will support three projects focusing on understanding the local neighborhood contexts and health to inform strategies for tailoring local action to reduce health disparities and support aging-in-place.

Systematic Transportation and Recreation Environment Evaluations Using Technology (STREET) studies aim to understand neighborhood conditions and pedestrian safety across select cities in the Americas by conducting virtual audits. Neighborhood conditions are assessed through virtual audits using Google Street View and other software.

The Area-Based Matching to Build Evidence and Equity project studies whether successful neighborhood change strategies have particular features (e.g., healthy food stores, walkable streets) or processes (e.g., community-led versus a top-down selection of what to change) in reducing health disparities. In other words, is it what changes about the built environment that matters, or do health benefits also depend on how change occurs?

In collaboration with NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Dr. Lovasi’s team has to offer decision support around food environment measurement. Together they have submitted a guide and glossary for publication. To further disseminate and build on what the team has compiled, the team created and maintains an online resource to guide the selection of data sources and the operationalization of food environment measures. Ensuring the web-based resources are current will support surveillance and intervention planning urban communications and has the potential to support location health departments in their work addressing inequities through a focus on communities with limited food access or ongoing food insecurity.

These projects bring together unparalleled data resources and build on a track record of policy-relevant work with large geographic data resources.

Essential Functions

  • Assemble literature to be used in publications from the project.
  • Contribute to preliminary data analyses (descriptive and data visualizations) on access to potentially health-supportive environments.
  • Conduct data analyses (quantitative and qualitative) to investigate neighborhood change strategies and processes and their implications for reducing health disparities.
  • Additional duties relevant to other research and training development.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience is required.
  • Experience contributing to research activities such as writing literature reviews and research reports for scientific and non-scientific audiences.
