Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Academic Library Services (ALS) is a branch of Academic Affairs and reports through the Provost/ Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs.ALS serves East Carolina University faculty, students, staff and visitors by offering library research and services to support the research, instruction and service goals of the University.

Job Duties
This position performs observation, reporting, and action in support of the library’s security operations. Work involves securing, guarding and protecting property and grounds by patrolling the interior and exterior of facilities and by monitoring activities using observation cameras, alarm panels, card access, or other electronic security systems. Work includes guarding property against fire, damage, theft or other hazards; monitoring assigned area for possible violation of policies, regulations and rules of conduct; recognizing and reporting unusual, suspicious or hazardous situations; providing information and assistance to the public; operating and maintaining security and enforcement equipment; and maintaining related records and creating reports. Work requires knowledge of standard safety, observation, and security practices and use of associated equipment; basic knowledge of standard methods of reporting and handling emergencies such as disturbances, fires, medical and security threats; knowledge of applicable policies, rules and regulations. Maintains confidentiality and discretion while conducting business; works individually and/or with others; and adapts to change and circumstances. The position may perform tasks to support other areas of the Building Operations department as needed, for example, during staffing shortage, unforeseen emergencies, and/or to complete critical projects. The position reports to the ALS Lead Security Officer. The position works mostly between the hours of 11:00 and 10:00 p.m. in selected shifts throughout the week, but must be available to work all shifts as necessary, including weekends and holidays.
Minimum Education/Experience
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require valid N.C. driver’s license.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience in Security and/or Law Enforcement field. Knowledge of the standard safety and security practices and experience in proper monitoring/observance techniques and use of the associated equipment (cameras, software, computer). Knowledge and skill in basic first aid. Working knowledge of standard methods of reporting and handling emergencies such as disturbances, fires, evacuations, etc. Some knowledge of the value of the materials to be guarded. Ability to meet and deal with the public tactfully, courteously and effectively. Ability to follow oral and written directives and instructions. Ability to implement security policies and procedures among a diverse group of stakeholders.
