Job Summary
As a Temporary Police Officer with the East Tennessee State University Department of Public Safety, you will perform law enforcement, crime prevention, and other general police/security services, enforce state and local laws as well as East Tennessee State University policies and procedures, proactive patrolling by means of foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or vehicle. Assignments are made based on the needs of the department and are subject to change.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to, in addition to meeting P.O.S.T. requirements, officers must be able to:
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Walk, climb, and lift.
  • Meet written departmental standards on appearance/grooming.
  • Pass a medical examination including vision screening and drug testing.
  • Obtain immunizations and medical tests as required to be able to work in patient care and high-risk areas.
  • Ability to react in emergency situations.


Working Environment:
  • Required to work nights/weekends/holidays.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather or weather extremes.
  • May be confined to a patrol car for an entire shift.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, steam, car battery acid, loud noises, smoke, and fire.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Education or G.E.D.
  • Certified police officer meeting all of the requirements for P.O.S.T. certification in Tennessee.
  • Graduate of an accredited approved Police Academy.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in the State of Tennessee or be eligible to obtain one and do so within 60 days of appointment, and maintain during incumbency.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and a US Citizen.
  • Must have successfully completed, annually, a department-authorized and POST-approved in-service training course consisting of at least forty (40) hours of instruction.
  • Must have successfully passed a background check that demonstrates a good moral character with no prior convictions that would prohibit meeting the standards set forth by the State of Tennessee to become a police officer.
  • Must have passed a Psychological Evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of experience as a Police Officer (will consider relevant military service as years of experience).
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in electronic records management software, law enforcement training in areas of instructor development, supervising event security, field training officer, and instructor courses for in-service POST curriculum.
  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Certification is a plus.
