Temporary Lecturer - Engineering Communications

This temporary position is for a Lecturer in the Engineering Communications Program (ECP) in the College of Engineering at Cornell University is available for Spring 2021 semester. The teaching will be for one section of an online and asynchronous course. Instructional materials will be provided; nevertheless, applicants should be well-versed in teaching online (Canvas, Zoom, and associated software). Teaching support will be provided by permanent faculty in the program. Experience teaching scientific and technical communications at the college level is important. Strong applicants should be comfortable with interdisciplinary teaching experiences, especially in engineering and in teams. Instructors will have full access to the Cornell Library, teaching tech support, and other mechanisms for instructional work via remote teaching methods.

This is a non-tenure-track temporary position. This lecturer will teach one section of the program's core course, ENGRC 3500: Engineering Communications (with a focus on technical/engineering writing, oral presentations, and working in teams). Enrollment will be <26 senior-level undergraduates from across Cornell’s College of Engineering. 

Start date is early January, 2021. The course ends May 31, 2021, and instructors have at least a week after May 14 to submit grades. The course does not require finals, but it usually has a large final project.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires at least an MA, preferably a PhD in one of these fields:

  • Technical Communication
  • Scientific Communication 
  • Applied Linguistics with an emphasis in ESP, EAP, and Genre Studies
  • Rhetoric and Composition Studies with an emphasis in technical communication

A familiarity with TESOL is desirable, but not essential.  Cornell University offers generous benefits and very competitive compensation. Cornell University uses Canvas as its learning management system, and we have a hearty technical support staff for any instructor.
