Job Description:

The Learning Specialist assists with the University's learning enhancement program, serves as liaison and/or advisor for all Joplin students and faculty, and helps ensure effective delivery of services. The Learning Specialist will engage students, individually and with group learning activities. The position will work collaboratively under the direction of the Assistant Vice Provost of Advising and Learning Enhancement to ensure access to academic support is integrated and equitably available to all Joplin students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists with the University's learning enhancement program by providing academic support and direction to students, sharing pertinent information with faculty and administration, mentoring students in preparation for exams, and providing support for special programs
  • Maintain student records in compliance with FERPA and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and other communications as appropriate
  • Serves as liaison and/or advisor for and between students and faculty, facilitating enhanced learning, ensuring effective transition to medical/graduate school, providing workshops and sessions enhancing the learning experience for students, helping ensure effective delivery of services, assisting with student orientation, and contributing to team effort by performing other duties as assigned
  • Contributes as an active member of/and collaborator for the Office of Advising and Learning Enhancement
  • Represents the University favorably and in accordance with established Core Values and expectations
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the organization
  • Attend relevant committee meetings (e.g. curriculum, orientation)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, education or related discipline. Master's degree preferred
  • Five years of experience working with dental/medical/graduate students
  • Five years of experience speaking in front of groups and/or serving in leadership roles
  • Familiar with learning and study strategies
  • Experience with student counseling and advising/coaching
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills essential
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and work diplomatically with students and faculty. Interpersonal, listening, and advising skills critically essential
  • Must be detail-oriented and have excellent follow-through
  • Must be cooperative, team-oriented, and able to work with all levels of constituents
  • Demonstrated ability to assess situations, problems, and issues quickly and appropriately, and respond promptly, concisely, and properly
  • Must be highly motivated, dependable, and committed to serving the University community
  • Proficiency in using word processing, spreadsheets, and course management systems
