Job Description
The Sanford Center for Aging (SCA) Transportation Program at the University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting a part-time position to operate an 8-person van with wheelchair lift, and SUV. The program provides transportation to adults 60 years of age and older who have limited other transportation options for essential errands, medical appointments, and participation in wellness programs.
Responsibilities
Acts as a friendly and welcoming representative of Sanford Center for Aging transportation services
Safely transports program participants to and from their designated destinations
When possible, provides “door through door” services, meeting participants at their front door and taking them through the door of their destination
Directs the loading and unloading of vehicle
Drives defensively, following safe driving practices, state and local laws
Follows assigned schedules
Ensures the safety of participants getting into and exiting the van, including safe procedures for using the lift and securing devices for participants with wheelchairs and/or other assistive devices such as walkers, canes, or crutches
Performs pre-trip safety inspections before operating the van, keeping the van clean and fueled, identifying necessary repairs and regular maintenance
Drives safely in adverse weather conditions
Supervises the behavior of passengers aboard vehicle to maintain safety
Administers first aid as needed
Accurately maintains passenger rosters, trip and mileage records and logs
The position may require lifting and/or moving large, heavy objects.
Performs additional tasks as needed
Required Qualifications
Candidate must have a valid Class “C” Nevada driver’s license or higher operator’s license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment
Candidate must possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record
Upon an interview, candidate must bring a printout of their driving record for the past ten (10) years, which may be obtained from the DMV (The cost of the printout shall be the responsibility of the applicant)
** Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances
Preferred Qualifications
Candidate has knowledge of:
Laws, rules, regulations and practices of automotive operations and safety
Basic first aid
State and local traffic laws and regulations
Safe transport and securement of wheelchairs and other assistive devices
Candidate has experience working with older adults
Candidate familiarity with Reno/Sparks geography, roads and major service providers
Candidate is able to apply defensive driving principles and driving safety
Candidate is able to use appropriate judgment in meeting unforeseen circumstances or bad weather conditions
Schedule
Expected hours to work per week: 10 – 20
This position requires a varied schedule to include evenings as well as varying days of the week dependent on program needs.

$13.00 - $17.00/hr depending on experience.
