Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks two (2) temporary Education Assistants to support and enhance Continuing Education's summer courses and camps for a wide range of audiences from children to adults, beginners to advanced students at two locations in Providence, RI and Barrington, RI. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Continuing Education (CE) Division whose mission is to educate students of all ages in art and design with high-quality accessible programs.

Education Assistants will provide assistance and teaching support to our faculty in the classroom and/or a studio setting. This position will help instructors in ensuring a positive, meaningful and rich learning environment. Education Assistants may help in preparing lesson plans; developing tutorials; interacting with parents; assisting instructors with feedback and assessment of student work; and instruct students in the proper use of laboratory equipment and materials.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform auxiliary tasks required in the classroom to support the main classroom instructor.

  • Meet with instructors regularly before coordinate lesson plans and after class to help prepare for the next day

  • Help with instruction, projects, and assignments.

  • Mentor and guide students during classroom activities, group and individual projects and breaks.

  • Help prepare materials for education programs in collaboration with assigned instructor(s), particularly for courses involving minors.

  • Discuss class progress and customize facilitated programs with the instructors.

  • Help facilitate the entire program experience, including not only the art and design elements, but also the environmental components and interactions with parents

Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • A proven ability to interact with members of the community representing diverse ages, backgrounds, and interests.

  • A demonstrated proficiency in the related studio environment.

  • Prior experience teaching, serving as a teaching assistant, and/or supporting a classroom learning setting.

  • Strong interpersonal, research and verbal communication skills.

  • Creativity, flexibility, and broad cultural experiences and personal warmth are essential.

  • The ability to travel to off-site locations.

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of art/design experience in an educational setting.
