The Wolfsonian Museum is seeking Collection Assistants for a 6-month period, with the option to renew, ideally starting on May 1st, 2024. This role involves supporting the packing and transportation of collection objects between our storage facility and museum building in Miami Beach. We are looking for candidates with art handling expertise and strong packing skills. 

Responsibilities 

• Assists in the safe packing and transportation of museum objects following proper museum preservation standards. 

• Helps in the design and construction of customized supports, boxes, and portfolios for a diversity of artworks including ceramics, metals, wooden objects, works on paper, and paintings. 

• Maintains accurate inventory spreadsheets (Excel) and prepares files to be uploaded into the museum database. 

• Supports collection care tasks such as environmental monitoring, pest management, and storage spaces maintenance. 

• Performs other collections care duties as directed by the Collections Manager.

Temporary

• Bachelor’s degree. The study of design, architecture, museum studies, studio art, or related fields are preferred. 

• 1-2 years of museum experience preferred. 

• Knowledge of museum collections care standards and procedures. 

• Excellent hand dexterity. • Demonstrated knowledge of proper methods for moving and handling museum objects. Experience packing museum objects for storage and transport preferred. 

• Ability to work independently and efficiently to produce consistent, high-quality results over duration of project. Attention to detail is critical. 

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 

• Possess a valid Florida driver's license.

 

  • High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of related experience. 
  • Artwork handling and packing experience. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows suite. 
  • This job requires the ability to stand for long periods of time and lift 50 pounds.

As a temporary employee, you will not be eligible to participate in all employee benefit programs (e.g., paid leave, retirement, or tuition reimbursement).

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), a temporary employee who works on average 30 hours or more per week may be eligible to enroll in health care benefits. As a temporary employee, you are also eligible to enroll in supplemental plans (e.g. dental, vision,) which requires full payment on your part.
